Qs on recruiting

after lurking here for a while we have some questions we would have asked during our kid's interviews if we'd known at the time that recruiting was a reality. now we need to ask you!

(1) how many adnissions slots are reserved for recruited students at HADES schools?
(2) does every sport have recruiting rights and slots?
(3) do other extracurriculars like music and dance also recruit?
(4) are academic standards relaxed for recruited students?
(5) do all recruited students receive full scholarships?
(6) if not, what other inducements are offered to attract them to one HADES school versus another?
(7) do coaches and other EC leaders have admissions influence beyond recruiting?

not intending to be judgemental in the slightest with these questions. just trying to get a better feeling for the admissions landscape that our kid is now wandering on.

the first question you need to ask yourself is how good is your kid at said sport?

i was asking questions that are more general than for any single sport. however since you asked, our kid is very good. i take it that you are not a parent.

hmm well contact the coaches did they call back or email back? u know that reg stuff

not i am not haha

if you have not written an email to the coaches here is an edited version of one of mine

and what sport does your child play is it one of the big ones of each season

Mr. ********,

It great to hear from you, I play both on the ***** state ODP team and the ODP national pool as well as playing with my club team at a very high and competitive level we are currently ranked 11th in region * and in the top 50 nationally I start on the team and play attacking and holding mid field and I can play on the out on the left flank if necessary. I am also the only random grade on the team. I would like to know about the possibility of continuing to play club ball while at **. I know that has a relationship with ******* a very prestigious club with an **** academy franchise that is why I would be so interested in your school and your program. I have poked around the website I really enjoyed my tour and felt really comfortable around campus. Also I was extremely impressed with your facilities. I feel that ***is what I am looking in a school academically and with its great blank sport pedigree. I can excel at both blank sport and academics at and finish out my final two years of high school with what I want.
All the best,

any chance of getting better answers to my questions above? i was NOT looking for advice about how to get my kid recruited! i was trying to get a better feel for how the overall admissions landscape is affected by recruiting. thanks!!!

Here’s my opinions based on direct observation/experiences and tales of others. I hesitate to use the word “recruit” as most student athletes are not actively hunted down and asked to consider the school but strong athletic ability definitely will make a candidate more desirable.

1) how many adnissions slots are reserved for recruited students at HADES schools? No concrete number - it will vary by school and vary by year depending on the need of each team given number of teammates graduating.
(2) does every sport have recruiting rights and slots? Some sports are considered more “important” than others so it is not uniform
(3) do other extracurriculars like music and dance also recruit? Yes, most definitely. To have a viable orchestra, dance program, theater program, etc. it is necessary to have the right student population. Same as sports.
(4) are academic standards relaxed for recruited students? Somewhat, but not dramatically. The student must still be capable of doing the work. The school would consider SSAT scores in the 60s for example but I think delving into 40s or below would be unlikely. Coaches have told me there have been athletes they have wanted in the past that don’t make it by the admissions office. These coaches are also teachers at the school and a high standard of academic caliber is important to them as well. Besides, there are PLENTY of smart kids that are also great athletes. It’s not necessary to lower the bar too far to find the kids they need and want.
(5) do all recruited students receive full scholarships? Boarding schools give out FA based on need not for athletics so amount of aid given depends on the family’s need. A student that can offer more to the school, athleticism included, may be more likely to get the FA they need.
(6) if not, what other inducements are offered to attract them to one HADES school versus another? Convincing the student that the school is the best place to be and the best for them - hence, current contact from coaches and they will woo you at revisits
(7) do coaches and other EC leaders have admissions influence beyond recruiting? Many coaches are also admissions officers. Coaches and other EC leaders do express interest in certain applicants to the admissions committee but the student needs to prove they are up to the academic and community standards as well. The student athlete will not be helping the team or school if they get kicked out for academic or behavioral reasons.

here are the answers to your questions:
i am sorry if i came off rude, i am a tad bit headstrong.

1) it varies from school to school, also it depends on the sport that your child plays; if it is hockey or lax then there are a lot more spots than say they have for water polo. usually for the big schools who have spots at their disposal, there are 3 or so spots in the major sports of each season IE fall: Soccer and Football. these spots are usual used for athletes who would have an immediate impact at the varsity, but do have the grades or the ssats that would normally get them in.

2) As i mentioned before, no they are in most cases given to the major sports or the school’s speciality sport.

3) yes and no, some schools do like i believe choate does for theatre because of its long history of producing actors. At other schools who do not recruit it is looked favorably upon just like kids who are good at sports but not good enough to be considered recruitable.

4) yes there are to a certain degree it also depends on the caliber of the school that they previously attended, coaches usually want a student with Bs or B-s. not lower than that. ssats can be in the 60s high 50s

5) just like college all this you hear about full rides is nonsense. they might get some FA and just like how ivies give their athletes money. if you had two kids who got accepted both with the same ssat scores, grades, caliber of previous school and amount of FA needed. if one kid is a star athlete and can help a team then he will get the FA and not the other.

6) An impressive background volunteer work like setting up your own charity, and academic awards from outside of school, like winning a robotics design contest or something like that.

7) i know that coaches have influence and pull over the admissions office for example they will a kid who is going to contribute to a school on the varsity level maybe not as soon as he gets there but will contribute to the team when he is say a 10th or 11th grader.

i hope i answered all of you qeustions

i starting writing this before doschinos made his post but i got distracted by something so i just posted this
