Qs re campus life

Ithaca college is on mark for a number of things for our D's profile, but

i recall seeing somewhere that Ithaca was in the top 20 of heavy Weed use, and also, mentioned alcohol use by students.
isn't Ithaca a dry campus?
also, I saw a mention of limited hot water in the dorms during the winter, dorms are cold, and not easy access to get into town?

would someone share their experience with these issues?
thanks.

Students always have weed and alcohol readily available to them in college. All colleges have this type of stuff going on. It's inevitable. That's nothing new. Now... Ithaca has said they took measures in trying to ban alcohol in dry dorms, but I'm not sure what measures they took. When I was there in April for a three day stay, I saw a beer bottle littered by a building. There's also a building--the West Tower, I think--that's known for its parties; loud music, etc. Students do whisper about drugs and know where they're found.

On the upside, there's no peer pressure. No one force anything upon anyone. And it's sort of like a "none of you business" thing. It's easy not to get associated with that type of thing.

There is easy access into town. There are huge taxi cabs that students share to split the cost--if you get enough people, it can easily be $2 among each kid. There are also bus transportations.

I was there for April, and it was pretty cold. The dorms aren't exactly cold though--I think they're pretty comfortable. When I took showers, there was hot water.

i'm a student at ithaca. drugs are amazingly easy to get here. probably easier than alcohol id say if you can imagine that. that is just the nature of college, anywhere you go will have this sort of thing. nothing new. as for the hot water, its college, come on. part of the allure of college is overcoming obsticles with people you've just met. its new, its exciting. its sometimes awesome, its sometimes gross, its sometimes downright depressing. but nevertheless, its college. ithaca is amazing and i cant wait for next semester to start.

go here

oh and as a follow up to the taxi comment.....the taxi companies in ithaca might just as well be the most horrible companies in the entire planet. they completely take advantage of drunk kids, completely making up "extra charges" for absolutely no reason but because they are money hungry lowlives that prey on college kids that are doing the right thing by not getting behind the wheel drunk.

done venting. sorry

i go/went to ithaca as well.

ithaca is technically a dry campus. all this means is that you can't carry alcohol around out in the open, even if you're 21. that's pretty much it.

ithaca is known as a "weed school" for a reason -- but there are plently of kids who choose not to smoke as well.

in the summer/spring/fall you can walk to the commons easily.

in winter (which is most of the school year) you'll freeze. you have to take a cab, and the cabs are very very expensive. it costs one person $9 to get to the commons in a cab, and the charge is .50 for every additional person. the commons is a little less than a mile away from campus. it's a little ridiculous.

i had no problems with the dorms or the showers, they were always fine.
