I got accepted through EN program at the beginning of this month. I was so excited and I decided to go to U of R. I've been noticed that the freshmen can choose between either Quad or Susan B Antony as their residential house. Can anyone give me some pros and cons about them? And please be specific. Thx!!!!

Honestly, it seems that whichever location freshmen live in, they all end up thinking it’s the best place. I think you’ll be happy in either location.

Food: Both the big dining hall and the quick market (Hillside) are in Sue B, so that’s really convenient if you want to eat without going outside to another building.

Library and classrooms: they’re probably about the same distance

Frats: the quad is closer to the frat area.

Rooms are bigger in the quad dorms. The gym and practice fields are right across the street. Some rooms have a very pretty view of the river.

But honestly, either location is good.

Does Susan B have more freshmen in it than the Quad? And newer? But I heard everyone lives in the Quad says that the Quad is the best, so I’m very confused

SueB is freshmen. The school has been changing the composition of the Quad over the past few years so I’m not sure how that works now.

The campus is small enough that it doesn’t matter. I suppose you are a few steps closer to the science labs from the Quad. But you are closer to the study library from SueB.

While SueB has a dining hall, Douglass is very close. That has kosher food and, I believe, more vegetarian options.

My son is there right now sitting in on a class. Yesterday he went on a tour and looked at the quad and sue b. I believe only ED gets the choice. He wants the quad after seeing both. Hubby said the rooms on the quad were bigger, but sue b had nicer windows. Sue B is all freshmen, the quad will have other years there. Sue B will have the dining hall right there, the quad is closer to the classes. I don’t really think you’ll be unhappy with either one. If it were me, I’d pick Sue B - I like the idea of going to breakfast in jammies and during bad weather to have it all right there. But that’s just an old mom talking.

Congrats! My son was also ED this past year and chose the quad. He loves it (he’s in Gilbert). No issues with food, walking to class, etc. Rooms are warm in the winter and there was a nice breeze in summer. I couldn’t believe how large the rooms were, too. And he does have a really nice view out his window. At the risk of being repetitious, I think you’ll be happy wherever you chose to live. Have fun looking for pictures online that students have posted. He had a good idea of the furniture provided and general room layout before he got there. He also joined a FB group someone created specific to his dorm and floor - which also made moving in easier.

Is there a common area in both dorms for social? Is there a quiet place in bulidings for study (if roomate plays music and I don’t want to go to library in bad weather, etc.)?
Thanks.

There are lounges on every hall of both Sue B and the quad dorms.

Don’t remember if there are study lounges.

Husband says yes. At least in the quad he saw he said there was a hallway and there is a lounge on one side with a tv and there is a room on the other side for studying. There is also a full separate kitchen, and sometimes they will all make dinner together. The girl doing the tour said she studies there when she doesn’t want to bother her roommate. Many kids seem to study in the library.

Rush Rees is a wonderful place to study! Lots of quiet nooks, private study carrels in the stacks and very nice lounge with a coffee/tea/snacks/sandwiches/soup/pastries restaurant. (Connections) Library offers wireless service. (And very helpful librarians too!)

Thanks for the dining link WOW mom. I found the pdf of the meal plans there and wondered which plan freshman usually take. They have Susan B Anthony on the list of what the minimum plan is but do the quads have a different name?

http://www.campusdish.com/NR/rdonlyres/8464B81E-23B2-4126-B396-3E6457B52D4D/0/BrochureRev7611.pdf

The minimum is the Blue unlimited plan. Unless they change them again this year. The declining dollars carry over from fall to spring but not from spring to fall.

So I take it you can get a sense of how much is being used from the first semester to know whether it is enough for the second one.

Meal plan options are restricted by which dorm a student lives in. Sue B and the quad dorms (Gilbert, Hoening, Burton, Tiernan, Crosby, Lovejoy, ) all require a minimum of the Blue unlimited.

Basically any dorm which does NOT have a private kitchen in each unit requires one of the larger, all-inclusive meal plans. Students may not have cooking appliances in their dorm room. (Fire and safety code violation)

To see the meal plan insert for this year, go to Campus Dish

and and click “River Campus Room Draw Insert” on the right hand side of the page.

The download will list the various plan options and minimum requirements for each dorm.

Lakemom - Gilbert, Hoeing, and Tiernan are the halls that have freshmen in the “Quad”. Most people find that if they buy the smallest meal plan possible, it’s more than enough.

With the declining dollars right now, students only get a fairly small amount with the unlimited plans. (It’s a major student complaint.) Since Starbucks and basically all on-campus dining options except for Danforth and Douglass use declining $$, the kids tend to run out of declining pretty quickly unless they manage their declining closely. But that just means they have to eat in the regular dining halls…

IIRC, you can only switch meal plans during the first 2-4 (??) weeks of each term.

Students cannot take a smaller meal plan than the minimum for their dorm.

My advice, take the smallest meal plan allowed by the dorm, you can always add $$ to your student’s Flex account (which can be used at any dining establishment on campus like declining) at any time during the semester.

Thanks! Now I know the names of the quad dorms that are for freshman. So are the ones that have kitchens for the older students?

Yes, the dorms which have full kitchens are Riverview Apts, Southside (Valentine, DeKiewiet and the Maisonettes). Drama House and some organizations housed on the Frat Quad have their own coop kitchens.

Chambers and Gale (in the Phase) have partial kitchens (cooktops w/microwaves & fridges but no ovens)–but the students still have to take a mid-range meal plan.

Housing selection goes by seniority–seniors get first pick; sophomore get last pick. Sophomores are very unlikely to get into Phase or Riverview. Southside is a possibility because it’s considered less desirable as the facilities are older and it’s located a 15 minute walk off campus.

UR will be breaking ground for a new dorm in the fall. But there will be no kitchens in the those units.

Thanks for the info. So since you are so in the know WOW mom , I understand Univ of Roch is planning to building sort of a little commons area, similar to RIT so there is more within walking distance of the school. I had read that it was stalled with, who knows what disagreements, to begin building instead of spring '12 to start fall '12. Do you know how that is progressing?
