Which is better for freshmen social life + meetin a lot of new ppl + makin friends: Quad or Hill?

Sub-question: How is it with finding a quiet place to study in the two places?

I'm entering as a freshman in 2010, so I can't answer this based on experience. However, I talked to a bunch of friends that go there and everyone says that both dorms are pretty social. I got the impression that Hill is even more social because it's very cramped and you can't help getting to know everyone, while there is some space in Quad. I was told that Quad is more conducive to studying quietly, but my friends said that it's noisy regardless of which building you're in, and if you absolutely need silence you should go to a library.

My friends live in the Quad and some in Hill, and they all absolutely love their building and say they're glad they're there (yes, even despite the notoriously crappy Hill dorms)

I'm a freshman in the Quad this year. The thing with Hill is it's pretty much all kids who did not get into the Quad, so it's a similar mix of people in a slightly less desireable dorm, as opposed to like Kings Court where you really will find a different assortment of people. I love the Quad and would certainly recommend that you put it as your first and probably second choice and Hill as a backup. You won't be unhappy if you're in Hill, as it is a very social dorm, but the Quad is much prettier, bigger rooms, more people, etc. Hill does have the best dining hall on campus in its basement and this is a definate plus.

The Quad is really not as loud and crazy as people make it out to be. Usually you can study in lounges (Provost's Tower is my favorite place to study here) and most people go to the library regardless of where you live. On the other hand Hill rooms are extremely small, so I'd think it's harder to study and I know they hang out a lot in the suite lounges instead of in their rooms. You won't be unhappy in either Hill or the Quad, but I really suggest the Quad as the more traditional (and gorgeous) part of the freshman experience. Hope this helps!

ps-Congratulations and be very very excited for next fall!!! :)

Hill is a horrible place to live and if you live there you will not get housing the next year.

people become friends wishing that they lived elsewhere.

The thing is, while Hill may be more social, the rooms are just so bad, especially if you have a double. It is even worse if you happen to not get along with your roommate (luckily I get along pretty well with mine). Still, the lighting is depressing (Hill is pretty dark compared to the well-lit white-light-bathed Quad hallways and rooms).

Many rooms have one set of lights clear back near the door and they take a while to reach their full brightness, and even then the light doesn't even touch the rest of your room, meaning you will have to buy a lot of external light sources. In terms of studying I think both the Quad and Hill are fine -- I have never had noise issues in either location. The good thing about Hill is that it makes you appreciate wherever you live next year to a huge extent.

I don't understand that comment. All my friends in the Hill have housing for next year.

Yeah I have housing as well. I don't know what that comment really means.

richard, please don't talk about hill unless you have lived there or live there currently...

hill has been a good place for me. also i have housing for next year... so, yeah, it's been a good home for freshman year.

face it, everybody in Hill wants to be on the quad...

face it: everybody most people living in Hill wants to be living in the quad. Some of them convince themselves that its not so bad not to be in the quad, but there is no comparison. and almost nobody wants to live in hill again.

Actually Richard I would have preferred Hill because it was close to the train station, which I used often this year (although now I probably won't be using it much anymore), and it was close to the DRL buildings where I had math classes last semester. The only real inconvenience was going to Huntsman. Furthermore Hill is close to Sansom which has a ton of restaurants, and it's closer to downtown Philadelphia. It's really all a matter of preference. Hill rooms aren't as good as the Quad though, I admit, but it does have its strong points. I would not want to live here again next year (and I'm not) but it was probably my best choice as a freshman.

Hey Max........first year down in the book.

True that :D

Concerning Quad and Hill again: what is something you wish you knew before going to any of the two? what is something that surprised you?

How is it with noise and sleeping in the two places?

Thankx!!

richard, i'm assuming you don't/haven't lived in hill...?

i applied to hill as my first choice last semester and was ecstatic when i got in! having completed my freshman year there, i'm ecstatic to have lived there and would not change my freshman experience in hill for anything! about not getting housing...the three ppl i applied to get housing with all also live in hill...we having housing next year in hamilton/rodin, the best high rise...

i highly suggest you not demean hill unless you have lived there and have a very good point to make...every other person i know in hill would not change having lived there either, and i know ppl who wanted to transfer out of the quad and the high rises to live here during the second semester but couldn't because all the rooms were full

hill rocks! 'nuff said :)

I keep reading Hill as Hell for some reason XD

Bt the way, did anyone here apply to Gregory?

Don't go to Gregory, u'll be so distant from everything. imagine walking in the snow back to Gregory after finishing a term project around midnight one late December. u won't like it. and u wont hang out with ppl a lot cos u'r distant from fun ppl. my friend dated a girl in gregory and everyone in gregory kinda knew by the next morning. funny, right?

Some ppl came to stay over at Hill the night before phys midterm, so they could pull an all-nighter cram with ppl in my suite. it's just a good distance to drl and engineering stuff.

Facilities at Hill are terrible, as well as rooms, but the frat houses are much worse. But if you know to clean and decorate ur room u will like it eventually. there's nothing like the wall paint coming off. no animals in the bathroom. (there r in frat houses and it happens if u dont take care of ur place.) and if something is broken, i saw that they repaired it right away. the dining hall is just downstairs as well as Hill express so u don't have to worry about not finishing ur meal plan unless u really avoid the dining hall. and if u finish ur meal plan early, u can borrow ur friend's penncard (that's illegal but i did it) and get it back to them in their room. some ppl had 80+ meals left and were willing to donate to friends.

at this time i can tell that the only reason i'm still here is my suitemates. i am grateful. they're so great friends. we ate, studied, worked, etc together. we chose the same sections in courses that we took together so we could group-studied at home (and the big tables in the lounge do their jobs). we loved blasting music (so loud as the laptop speakers could blast) and humming while doing math homework. sometimes it's hard to finish work in the lounge. i can't explain in words. hanging out with my suitemates r just great.

i used to have an impression that premeds are selfish. but my best friends who are premeds were the sources of hugs and comforts when i felt like jumping out of the window, esp after T_T midterm scores and job downsides and so on that could get me down.

if something is broken, u can fix. but if the ppl around u are terrible, u can't change them. i love the people in my suite and we became best friends. we all will do community living together next year so we'll keep the traditions of our suite.

The residential programs are great if u're really interested in it. some ppl even chose residential programs just to get into Hill. Choose Hill and u wont be disappointed cos u'll definitely get it.

i'm kinda nerdy but my roomie has the broadway voice. we get along well anw and i love her. the year at hill was the best year of my life.

Btw, I'm LAgal's suitemate. we wholeheartedly love hill.

The quad is fine. i mean, the facilities are fine, but u'll have smaller suite and u dont have big lounge with big tables. the dining halls are far away and, unless u'r a biology major, most classes are at painful distance. u can't cook at all because u dont have any kitchens. Spring Fling is in the quad, so u wont be able to sleep or have really peaceful life during Fling.

The noise is not bad except for fridays and the weekends. one worst thing is the ambulance noise. both hill and quad ppl hear the noise but i guess the quad is worse becos it's right by the hospital.

If you live in hill, you need this:

http://www.preppytees.com/hill.htm

Gross, I hope all people in the Hill don't drink Miller High Life.

i live in hill but i dont drink. u r not allowed to obviously take alcoholic drinks into hill, nor r u allowed to drink and/or get drunk in the lounges (the ga's will catch u and send u to the housemaster, then u'll get into trouble). but ur room is urs unless u'r making smell or something creepy out of ur room.

anw, the medical amnesty says that if u need medical help when u'r drunk or so u wont get into trouble. so if u pass out in the lounge and ur friends try to rescue u that's another case.

the above message applies to all the dorms actually. but if u live at hill u'r more likely to find friends hanging out in the lounge when u get back around 3 am on friday nights, while if u live at the quad u have to knock on doors to find someone. that's the difference.

feel free to im me and ask questions. i'm not sure when the housing deadline for freshmen is.
