Qualified

the naval academy is my top choice but you get until May 1 to decide so I'm going to keep my options open till I hear from other schools in case I have a change of heart. good luck and happy holidays.

heyitsme~just out of curiosity, when you have a Presidential Nomination do you apply for Senatorial / Congressional nominations also? I am just interested in understanding the process...and if so does that put you in a better position to be accepted? It's sure a complicated process! It must be nice to know you're in your first choice school so early...plenty of time to prepare physically too...Best of Luck!

when i recieved the presidential nomination they advised me to continue applying and interviewing with my senators and congressman. im not sure, but i dont think getting a presidential nomination makes it any better than recieving a senatorial nomination, its just an extra chance at recieving one.

heyitsme

congratulations. what were your stats? you received the Presidential during October and when was your file complete?

I have been following the communication on this site for several months while my son has gone through the application process to the Naval Academy. I have followed the issuance of LOA's (which he did not get) and CVW invites (which he finally got). He attended summer seminar (he said it was the best week of his life). He just got nominations (not principal) from one of our senators and from our local congressman. From what I am reading here, it doesn't seem like getting two nominations is any better than just receiving one - is that correct? It is so hard to wait to hear - so many of his friends have gotten into college early decision. He is a baseball player (not recruited by Navy) and we get calls every week from coaches from the other schools he has applied to. They all want to know what is going on and if they are the first choice after Navy. We have cautioned him to be careful what he says - he is still such a long way away from an appointment to the Academy. He needs to keep his other options open. The Division I schools that were interested in him wouldn't wait for Navy to decide - they all made up their minds in the fall. So he has already forgone several opportunities - so the life of sacrifice has already begun. Does it seem like things are moving faster this year than in years past? I am interested in your thoughts - you all seem to have so much more information than I have.

I forgot to add that he is triple qualified

As far as I can tell, multiple nominations are helpful because they give the academy more options to admit your son - he might not be the most competitive on the senator's slate, but may be the most competitive on the representative's slate (ignore this if they use the principal method, not the competitive method).

If he's not the number one on either slate, and he doesn't have an LOA, you may be looking at February at the earliest, possibly May for notification.

There's an excellent discussion over on the Air Force board regarding nominations.

doglover1585:

Did your son also apply for an NROTC scholarship? It sounds like my son and your son are in the same position. My son also is triple qualified and has two nominations, but no LOA. He has been invited to the spring batch of CVW's. Has your son picked a weekend yet? From everything I have heard/read on this forum; it seems like our sons may not hear anything definitive until February - April. The encouraging thing, though, is that based on previous year's classes; candidates that are triple qualified and have a nomination have about a 75% chance of receiving an appointment. Good luck to your son.

Doglover: Despite the anxiety of waiting expressed by many on this forum, it does seem that appointments are showing up earlier this year. It could be the quality of candidates on the forum or that USNA is quickening its pace to compete with the early decision process.

Based on you info, your son's chances appear excellent. However, excellent chances are no match for an appointment in hand.

We are in the waiting mode as well. Our son has his qualified letter and is waiting to hear about nominations. As I posted previously, our congressional rep. doesn't have interviews until January 15th so it will likely be the end of January before we learn the outcome.

Keep the faith - and have a joyous Christmas.

he decided that he was not interested in ROTC. If he doesn't get in the academy this year he will go to one of the Division III schools that wants him to come to play baseball and he will reapply next year. He is really committed to the academy.

doglover1585, why isn't your son interested in ROTC? If he truly wants to serve his country, ROTC is a great alternative because he will still come out as a commissioned officer. I can understand his desire to attend the Academy, but if he isn't accepted either this year or next, what will his plans be? One of my friends that graduated 2 years ago applied twice to the Academy and didn't get in. He was certain he would get in the 2nd time around and didn't. His stats were awesome, but for some reason (maybe it's because we live in such a competitive state - VA) he still didn't make it. Unfortunately, he decided not to go into ROTC and now he's thinking of going to OCS. He said if he would have gone into ROTC, his chances would have been so much better getting into the Academy, and I have to agree. His main goal now is to become an officer and he is staying on top of his grades in college to see that that happens.

he research it very carefully before he made his decision. He would really like to play college baseball and was told that he could not do both baseball and ROTC. He figured out that he could go to OCS after graduation if he still had the desire. We left it up to him. I should also say that ROTC really isn't anything that is done very often in our community so I am not certain what kind of information he received from the people he spoke to.

Doglover, what schools is he applying to? I was interested in playing college soccer, and was recruited at several schools (ranging from DI to DIII), and at all the ones I asked about NROTC, they said that I could both play and be a Midshipman. Time management would be difficult, but it could be done. A lot of the units recognized that conditioning for the sport would be just as rigorous (if not a lot more so) than the PT done at the individual units. I would email the coach of the school before deciding that NROTC is still not an option (if you're really interested. If not, don't worry about it, of course).

I know that with DIII schools in particular it should be much easier to do NROTC (the athletic time commitment just isn't as big). Hope this helps!

I was told the same thing about crew and ROTC.

I've been doing this blog for a couple weeks, and will try to keep it updated pretty frequently..

Ok-I'm starting to freak out, I've got two nominations and a intvite to CVW, but no quailifed letter yet......my eyes aren't 20/20 so I don't know if this is the hold up or what? But I though invitations to CVW only got to fully quailifed canididates....any ideas?

I believe that CVW invites go to competitive candidates. Since you require a vision waiver, I do not know if your would be considered "fully qualified" or not. You could, however, still be extremely competitive, depending on the quality of the other candidates.

Go to CVW, have fun, experience it all, and then sit back and wait the outcome. That is all you can do now. Do not waste your senior year obsessing about this, it will ruin your last chance to experience life as a high school student. Make sure you have a back-up plan that you are happy with.
Good Luck,
CM

Good advice, CM. However, you can be fully qualified and need a vision waiver. I don't know if I've received one (I haven't gotten a letter about it), but I was sent the QQQ letter.
