Qualify for instate tuition for UF???

my dream school is UF but I dont want to pay the outstate tuition and pay the instate

What that means is, your strategy to pay instate is:

June: move to Tampa, live with Grandma, claim that as your current address, get a drivers license, register to vote, etc. Enroll in community college (paying out of state tuition for that).

January-ish: Apply to UF. Claim in-state status.

April (or whenever): when my family back home claims their dependents, they CANNOT claim me.

August: Attend my first classes at UF, hopefully by now paying in-state.

this is what florida residency sheet says:

-I am an independent person and have maintained legal residence in Florida for at least the past 12 consecutive months.

-be a dependent person and my parentt or legal guardian has maintained residence in florida for at least 12 months.

-be a dependent person who has resdied for five years with an adult relative other than my parent or legal guardian and my relative has maintained legal residence in florida for at least the past 12 consecutive months

Independent: a person who is at least 24 years old, married, a graduate or professional student, a veteran, a member of the armed forces, an orphan, a ward of the court, or someone with legal dependents other than a spouse, per the U.S Department of Education for the purposes of federal aid eligilbility. There may be limited cases where a person under the age of 24 years old may qualify as an independent student. Such students will be required to verify independence.

Is there any way I can do this? im 21 years old, living with my grandma for 5 years is crazy long, and my parents live in NY???

For financial aid purposes, you are a dependent of your parents who are residents of NY. It doesn’t matter whether they claim you or not on their tax return. You will have to wait until you’re 24 for this to work.

Or enroll and complete school in NY and then move to Florida to work after you earn a degree.

As I read your post, you are already 21. If so, you aren’t going to really have the traditional 18 year old freshman experience anyway.

Why UF?

The only way for you to get instate tuition NOW as an undergrad who is under 24 years of age is for your WHOLE FAMILY to move to Florida a FULL YEAR before you plan to start college.

YOU living with grandma does not change the domicile of your PARENTS which is what is used to determine instate status.

You are a resident of NY state. You have a couple of choices…you can enroll in college in NY and get your bachelors degree there at instate costs. OR you can wait until you are 24 when you really will be independent from your parents…oh…but remember to move to Florida a year before you plan to enroll in college there after you are 24…get a job and pay taxes there.

Emancipate. Move to FL. Enroll in community college (Santa Fe is in G-ville and they work together) After a year, transfer in.

Chargers–the OP is 21—it’s way too late for him to seek emancipation.

Only juveniles under 18 years of age can petition the court for emancipation.

Emancipation is not easy to gain. The poster who posted this makes it sound like a “slam dunk”. It’s not.
