Qualifying for in-state tuition

I am a New York state resident (high school senior) and I have already put down my deposit for a NY state school. However, my parents have informed me today that they plan to move to Florida within a year and retire there. I am not looking forward to having to take a plane ride to Florida to go to my parents during every school break (which is a main reason I chose to stay local). Essentially, my question regarding my situation is:

If my parents move to Florida and live there for a year while I attend a school in New York, would I be able to claim residency in Florida and qualify for in-state tuition if I say that I am living with them (which I would be technically)?

I would be looking to possibly transfer to a Florida state school in however long it would take for me to qualify for in-state tuition, because I don’t want to pay the expensive out-of-state cost. I am rather confused with everything regarding residency and whatnot, so go easy on me. I’ve tried doing research on my issue prior to posting this, but I was unable to find anything that pertained to my specific situation. If anyone could even show me where I could find answers, that would be very helpful! Thanks in advance.

Your parents’ residency determines your residency. They must live in Florida for 12 months with all “ties” to their NY residency severed. That means, it is 12 FULL months from the time they get their home, driver’s license, and auto registration. Your paperwork usually relies on ONE parent, so make sure mom or dad has all of these things. It does not matter where you are living during that year, as long as you are still their dependent, their home is your home.

On the bright side, you will have a warm place to visit at Christmas and Spring Break
