Would those familiar with the university comment as to whether this year seems to be a particularly competitive year? Although we were thrilled that D was accepted into the UCONN business school, we know of good students who have been deferred. Is there an expectation that the percentage admitted is going to go below 50% this year?

For all universities, this is a more competitive year. For state schools, this is particularly true. There is no doubt that the acceptance rate for UConn will be lower this year, not only because the bar is being raised, but because there are more applicants.

Yes, I’ve read both, apps are up at all state universiites. I’ve seen recent articles about the CA system, the Suny’s and this for CT:

With economic uncertainty roiling around them, the state’s private and state colleges applied various strategies to arrive at what most say will be right-sized freshman classes this fall.

For the private colleges, the question last fall when the stock market plunged was whether fewer students would be able to pay - or willing to incur the debt to cover - the hefty price tag of a private education - $30,000-$50,000 this year for tuition, room and board.

At state universities - such as the University of Connecticut, where in-state students will pay about $20,000 this year for tuition, room and board - admissions officials were concerned that enrollment might prove overwhelming.

That said, UConn, as Philosopher knows, can be very erratic with aid and acceptance. Every year, it seems someone who thought they were a shoo-in didn’t get in and others did. Reasons are sometimes not known to us, what they were looking for, but for the number of applications they receive, they do a pretty good job. I have also heard of students that had a GC intercede and get in later.

We think that admissions is great at UCONN particularly the Staci that is on the online chat. On more than one occasion, she has been friendly and reassuring as well as very informative. What is the number of applications to date? How much of a percentage is it up from last year?

The number of acceptances will be the same, if not less, than last year. The number of applications has risen by, I would say, between ten and twenty percent.

Interesting, this year is also characterized by many deferral’s ,was this the case for past application years as well?

Keep in mind that CC is not necessarily representative of the pool of applicant.

Only a one percent increase in applications this year. I expected it to be more.
