Hi All! My D has was accepted into Shenandoah’s BFA MT program and she is very impressed with the vocal and the acting curriculum and staff. However, we have found that info on the dance component is not nearly as detailed or as readily available. Is there a strong focus on dance? We know there is a new curriculum coming out for Fall 2014, does anyone know how many hours of dance will be included each week? Is there a strong focus on the essential technique foundations of ballet and jazz all 4 years (or at least 3 years)? Dance is D’s “3rd skill”, so it is very important that she strengthen it over the next 4 years. We also view dance as a critical part of “keeping fit” as an MT performer since there may be little time/energy outside of the curriculum to get consistent physical exercise. Any and all input is appreciated!

The dance component of the Musical Theatre curriculum at Shenandoah Conservatory is carefully designed to provide a sequential development of the necessary skills in ballet, tap, jazz and musical theatre dance styles necessary for a successful career. During the freshmen year, students will have four 90 minute technique courses in ballet and/or jazz each week. In the sophomore year, students take a minimum of two 50 minute tap classes per week, and many continue their training with additional courses in ballet or jazz. The junior year is devoted to a study of musical theatre dance styles, with two 50 minute classes per week, and the senior year returns them to jazz study, with two 50 minute classes per week. Juniors and Seniors frequently take additional courses in ballet, tap, modern dance, Pilates, hip-Hop, social dance or contact improvisation, selecting those areas that either address technical weaknesses or stylistically diversify their training. Dance courses at Shenandoah are “leveled,” and students are placed in courses that will maximize sound technical training for their individual instrument. Some musical theatre students may be invited to take technique courses with the dance performance majors, and some audition for the Shenandoah Dance Ensemble, in order to participate in dance concerts when those rehearsals are compatible with their casting for the Theatre Division’s productions.

Thank you, VT, for getting this detailed info! Just another reason we are so impressed with Shenandoah!
