Quality History University

Hello everyone, my name is Daryl, and this happens to be my first post - it's good to be on here -

My question is this - I'm curious to know everyone's opinion on quality universities in the field of history, focusing on the south and southeast - I currently live in Illinois, and am attempting to get into U of I, but I may also take the transferring opportunity to travel a bit - are there any resources on the web (I've looked, but no luck) or does anybody have any advice on what schools I should look into?

They probably don't need to be highly selective colleges, but selective to more selective schools I may just have a shot at - thank you for all information.

Daryl

William & Mary, UVA, UNC, LSU & Vanderbilt to name five.

Any school will have a good history program. However, if you're looking to focus on the southeast, an old school in the south may be your best bet.

Wake Forest, Furman, Washington and Lee and Tulane all have highly respected History programs.

where do u guys get these lists?
could someone get me sociology, pleaseee?

Well....those lists are helpful as starting points. But they often miss programs for one reason or another. The thing to do is grab a hold of the college bulletins at the schools you are interested and research course offerings, faculty credentials, special programs and double majors and study abroad programs etc.

You are not looking in the northeast. But there are many up there not on those lists who deserve recognition.

We also asked around from people in the "History" world and got some interesting responses, both positive and negative about many schools.

Sociology would be Wisconsin, Chicago, Berkeley, then the rest.

Ah, I kinda doubt Berkeley is below Wayne State, Boston U., Catholic U, and Buffalo in sociology.

<I'm not sure that those were in order of ranking were they?
if it was then that's interesting =/

What kind of history interests you? American (Colonial, Civil War and Reconstruction, Southern (Ante-Bellum, New South), Frontier, Western, Immigration, African-American, Latino, Ethnic); European (English, [what time period?], Russian, Central or Eastern Europe), Middle Eastern, African (North African, Sub-Sahara, Colonial, Modern), Asian (China, Southeastern Asian, Middle East); Latin American (Brazilian, Spanish-speaking LA), Roman, Greek, Ancient, Medieval. And so on and on and on.

American History interests me the most, with Revolutionary/Colonial America at my highest interest - although the age of antiquity gets my goat as well.

As a follow up to the post, I would prefer to stay south (still can't stand the cold), but let me get more specific about my qualifications, just to get an idea from everyone what my realistic opportunity of transfer acceptance would be...

I'm 28, with a 2.7 GPA - however, my GPA is somewhat misleading, as when I was 19 I dropped classes "unofficially" - killing my GPA in the process. I've actually built it up from a .8! My last three semesters have been mostly A's with some B's thrown in - does this give me any chance at a respected university?

Aren't there different types of history to choose from?
