Hi, I'm a junior from South Dakota interested in attending CWRU. While reading about CWRU on the Princeton Review's website, I noticed that CWRU had a quality of life rating of 66/100. Why would it be so low? Does anyone know how life is at CWRU and in Cleveland?

Also, for those of you who have visited, is it a nice and pretty campus? Thanks for your help!

I visited campus in the middle of January when it was -5 degrees outside and still loved it. It was very pretty in the snow, and I imagine it would be gorgeous when its green. I am not a student there (yet) but would imagine that the low-ish rating is because of the very cold and snowy weather/loooong winters. or the bad sports teams =D

It seemed to me that there is a TON to do up there - lots of little shops and restaurants nearby, the Cleveland Symphony hall is literally right next to campus, there were several museums, a play house, CIM if you’re musically inclined…but this is from an outsider’s perspective :)
any current students with imput??

Bad sports teams?? Case has had a nationally ranked D3 football and men’s soccer team for the last 4 or 5 years. Fan attendance is very high at both. Not to mention the very entertaining marching band…

Weather is big factor in low quality of life rankings. Cleveland winter is long, dark and dreary. That said, it is a wonderful school and campus, you just have to be prepared for the depressing winter.

well I’m from South Dakota and the weather doesn’t get much worse than here! So you said you liked the campus? Is the area safe? And is very fun to go to college in Cleveland?

hiltzation & The Mom: Oh yeah? You wanna talk about bad sports teams???
My wife and I are Warriors season ticketholders.
17 wins and the season is almost over.
Time for the playoff push!!!
DS has no fear of the cold whatsoever.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Cavaliers (if they can hold onto James)? Heaven!

The campus is beautiful and right across Euclid Avenue from the Cleveland Museum of Art; walking around the lagoon there is great.

The new dorms are amazing.
When you are on campus at Case, you are adjacent to Little Italy and very close to Coventry, a really fun area full of shops and restaurants and music venues that 20-somethings appreciate.
When we did a tour, I liked that there is a cafeteria “outpost” on the far end of campus and if you are over there at lunch time, you can get lunch with a meal plan card swipe. Most campuses make you spend a lot of “dining dollars” to eat away from the cafeteria.
I also thought it was entertaining that you can have a pet bunny rabbit in your dorm room if it is okay with your roommate. Not many other colleges allow that
(My daughter has several friends who live on campus at CWRU, and I did a degree there myself.)

The reason it’s probably so low is there is a constituency of Case students who are social pariah’s and who refuse to be social. You’ll notice that there are a few of them on this site. Cleveland also is a below average city- high crime, high poverty. Campus security security has gotten a lot better since my freshman year. The weather is iffy. If you have a good attitude and are social, you’ll love it. If you are a sourpuss who only cares about grades, and not social life, you are not going to like it. Certain majors are also work intensive, but I easily handle my workload. Basically if you look at the good things and not the bad, you’ll enjoy yourself. If you are a pessimist, you’ll be unhappy. There are plenty of good things about Case, some people just focus on the bad. Take it with a grain of salt.

There is a lot of info in the Case thread. Lots of good merit $ (not so good on need based aid) . I’d definitely encourage you to apply. With good enough stats you may get a postcard that allows you to waive the application fee.

If it is not easy to visit, you wait until after decisions and scholarships are announced and then go to one of the Accepted Students weekends. (Timing is tricky though with air travel - plan carefully.)
