i heard miami is notorious for lack of diversity. how do asians fit into the fold at miami?(any racism, making friends, girls, etc.) I am not a FOB, just to clarify

how are the oxford and university police? are they a holes? i heard they give tickets just for being drunk in public(not driving). like can i stumble out of a bar and just catch a bus/cab back to my place? are there even cabs? how late does the public transport go?

how much is a decent off campus house? is there ghetto areas I should avoid? how is oxford as a whole?(according to wikipedia, it is pretty poor, but it may be due to college students not having a salary)

how is the food scene at oxford?

just to clarify, I am only being critical and very direct to try to get truthful information. alumnis, please don't take any offense

Food is awesome, by stats one of the best campus food in the country.
Poor? I do not know what this means. Yes, majority population is UG students. They either do not work or they work few hours / week for wages close to min. I do not see anything unusual in places like this, most are supported by their families, who live outside of Oxford and whose income is not reported for Oxford. So, this criteria is strange. There is a good number of OOS students, paying $40k+ / year in tuition. I would not exactly call these families “poor”.
I do not think that campus is very diverse. On the other hand, I did not hear complaints in regard to unfair treatment or simply being uncomfortable
Strongly encourage to visit, preferrably several times, stay overnight, talk to students, eat at campus, go to rec center, ice arena. “Ice” sports is Miami thing, hockey and famous world ranked synchro skating team (not many would know that sport even exists, I certainly did not know before)
Quality of life would strongly depend on each student. Keep in mind, Miami is a middle of nowhere, it is NOT for “city” people. Most who like OSU a lot, do not like Miami at all. However, for those non-city types, it is a heaven on earth.

the city of oxford just has a large number of people living under the poverty line. I thought this is probably due to many of the residents being full time students but I wasn’t sure. I understand msot kids are also from high middle class fam. but I was wondering how oxford is as a town, not the campus itself. typically poorer areas have certain problems.

Oxford is a very small town - very small. It’s a college town. Almost all of the businesses rely almost entirely on students for their business. There really is no “ghetto” area of Oxford.

There is very little diversity. The population is overwhelmingly white, and most kids are from upper-middle class families.

For freshman, you are required to live on campus. That might be true of sophomores too - not sure. There is plenty of off-campus housing for upperclassmen.

“wondering how oxford is as a town, not the campus itself”
-I would say that Oxford is a campus and campus is Oxford. Very small place filled priamarily with college kids. It looks like you did not visit. Our answers here will not substitute your visit, and preference is to visit several times. There are bars, alright, but this is not the focus. My D. was able to visit them primarily in her senior year, she did not have time before, she was engaged in many things and had to maintain very high GPA. there is much more to life than bars. There are graduate students there, there are great Research opportunities, the good thing is that Miami’s priamry focus is UGs (Miami is #2 in the country in undergraduate teaching), so you will not have TAs at lecture, it will always be prof., and it is easy to obtain Research Internship while in UG.

As a freshman here, Ill try to answer as many of these questions as possible. I have noticed a lot of Asians on campus and apparently there are a lot more this year than previous years.

As for the Oxford police, they are starting to crack down a lot but you will only get arrested if you arent being smart. Dont go uptown if you are going to blackout (or unless you know people working at the bars.) If you are in a group, you can be drunk but dont be the drunkest out of the group. I like to stick to off-campus houses because you are way less likely to get caught.

I dont think theres a ghetto part of campus and I dont know enough about the areas outside of uptown to tell you where to avoid. Oxford pretty much revolves around Miami, which I like.

The food is really, really, really good. There are so many choices and the food uptown is amazing as well. Its some of the best public university foods in the country.

I absolutely love it here and couldnt see myself anywhere else (and Im out of state). Good luck deciding!
