I honestly don't know about the music composition program at U of San Diego, but I DO know that their music department is VERY VERY small. DD spoke to the department chair about ensemble opportunities, and they have a very small chamber orchestra that they supplement with community and faculty players. It took us quite a while to even FIND the music department in their building. USD was one of DD's favorites nevertheless.

I only know that, by reputation, UCSD is one of the leading programs in computer music and UCSC is supposed to have a good music program. I know someone who recently got a PhD at UCSC in Latin American music, but I don't know about composition specifically. Sorry.

thanks for the info, still looking for more :)

I'm not sure about how well music composition is at UCSB, but my girlfriend is a music major (piano.) So I hear about her classes, events, and attend certain events. My previous piano teacher (of 8 years) before I went to college also graduated from UCSB. That being said, from what I feel, the music department is competitive, and i've seen a bit of talented musicians. Heck, Yo-Yo Ma even gave an open public Master's Class last year; it was awesome to see it. The sad news is that there has been a sort of budget deficit in the department, so they had to lay off some professors (my gf's piano teacher included.)

Apparently the theory gets pretty damn hard. My gf who came from China's famous music conservatory spends hours of time on it. However the TAs are incredibly helpful and nice (i've met them myself.)
