Hi Im a senior in HS and i was accepted to University Park and I couldn't be more excited(Im all but ready to accept it before hearing from the rest of my schools). Im not sure but I really think I want to pursue a career in cardiology or at least medicine and I was wondering what was the quality of Penn States pre med program? Do al ot of PSU grads get into their choice med schools? If anyone has any insight to this I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much and good luck to anyone else waiting to hear back. Go State!

friendly advice. Major in BMB, chemistry or biology. You can still go to medical school and you will be much better prepared for alternatives if you decide against medicine.

I believe the information you requested is on the ECoS web site. look around.

Agree with that advice 100%.

1) A premed degree has very little value if you decide not to go to medical school.
2) A premed is competing with other premed’s when applying to med school. Having a different major is another way of standing out a little from the crowd.

Most people I know that are doing premed do Chemistry/Biology

According to the advising office, ~60% of students are accepted to at least one medical school. I’m not sure how many of that figure got into their top choice, though. Like the posters above, I would say absolutely DO NOT major in premedicine. There are not many things you can do with a premed degree and I’ve heard it’s just like you took the bare minimum classes. If you are 100% sure that you would want to go to medical school though, I would suggest considering majoring in other options like Biobehavioral Health (most other schools don’t have this major) where you can keep up a strong GPA instead of the common Biology, Biochem, or Chem route. BBH for example is a lot easier than BMB and you can just build in your premed reqs within these classes. Also, if you are not accepted into medical school, a B.S. degree in straight-up Biology or Chemistry is not very helpful in job outlook atm

I dont love bio or chem enough to major in them to be honest. Im good at them so I would not mind taking the classes for another major but I feel like it wouldnt be the major for me. Do you think excersize science would suffice then I would have physical therapy which I love as a fall back or do you think that is also too risky

Major is virtually irrelevant in med school application as long as you meet the course requirements.

penn state is a good choice though if im aspiring for med school? I got into pitt med program and I know its a good program but I just love Penn State and thats where I see myself. Can I get into just a good a school from there?
