Any school in the ACC except BC (cold weather)

"Don't know enough about some of these schools to evaluate their quality, but I can't exactly see Kansas, Nebraska, Ohio, Penn State etc. as..... "warm" weather."

Lol, I suppose you have a point. Oh well, I'm from Minnesota- it's all relative!

man ut-austin...50,000 students plus an incredible sports program. only thing is campus is tiny for its size

I feel like I'm repeating myself with all of these threads, but it sounds like Duke is the perfect fit. It might not be as large as you're looking for (around 7,000 undergrads), but the campus is rather large and the students are really close, there is a real sense of "community".

And I agree with cheapseats, if he's decent at football, he probably could walk on lol.

5 Duke University (NC)
17 Rice University (TX)
18 Vanderbilt University (TN)
25 Univ. of California Los Angeles*
27 U. of North Carolina Chapel Hill*
27 Wake Forest University (NC)
30 Univ. of Southern California
37 Georgia Institute of Technology*
43 Tulane University (LA)
50 University of Florida*
52 University of Texas Austin*
55 University of Miami (FL)

All quality schools, with good weather, and good sports (Division I Football, Division I Basketball).

careful on U of Florida. its a great school with awesome sports, but it can be hard to get into from out of state unless you're a NMF. If he gets in though, that would definately get my vote! big school, big sports, small town feel, but you still have everything you need. good luck! I wish my parents had taken such an active role in helping me into college.

well, u florida isn't all that hard when compared to the other schools talked about here. UF should be a big time safe bet if Duke, rice, and vanderbilt are being considered. Over the past 2 years only 28 students applied to UF from my high school and 11 were denied. 10 of the 11 had below a 1200, everyone but 1 person above a 1200 got in. SOmeone got in with a 2.8W and got in. UF is a great school but compared to the other schools mentioned it is not all that hard to get into.

What is he interested in? If it is business then UT-austin would be amazing. USC looks like it would be fun all around.

Duke football is generally pretty bad.

Big vote here for UMiami. Sounds perfect for him.

redsilver, I have to admit I only got into this after walking into the process cold and clueless with his older sister's applications last year. She wound up applying to 15 schools all accross the board and then having to decide in roughly two weeks in late April.

And I can't reuse much of what I learned with her, since he and she couldn't be more different. He isn't even interested in visiting her school. So the only thing I learned which will be of much use is to start early and be prepared for lots of changes of course when SATs come in and visits to campuses start.

A2Wolves6, a number of the schools on your list are ones he's expressed some interest in. Places like UT, Rice, Nebraska Notre Dame and Kansas are a bit of a stretch culturally or geographically. I guess we'll just wait and see after the SATs, APs etc. and then start some early campus visits in the Fall and Spring of next year.

Although many have been stating University of miami, i dont think its a good fit for him. Living and going to school about 10 blocks away from UM really shows you how overrated UM can be, it overpriced for the education you get there, the education at UM is comparable to Florida state university, yet cost about 9x more.
He should go to University of florida, or georgia tech

mhc48

Here are some other schools to consider that are easier to get into.

60 Texas A&M Univ. College Station*
71 Southern Methodist University (TX)
78 Baylor University (TX)
78 Clemson University (SC)*
78 North Carolina State U. Raleigh*
85 Auburn University (AL)*
85 University of Tennessee*
93 University of Tulsa (OK)
97 Texas Christian University
97 University of Arizona*
104 University of Alabama*
109 Florida State University*
109 University of Oklahoma*
109 Univ. of South Carolina Columbia*

U of Miami is not necessarily more expensive than U of Florida. UF does not give much money in scholarships to OOS students unless they are NMS finalists. UM has a very generous scholarship program. Son got a 3/4 tuition scholarship at UM, which made it very tempting! Don't look at sticker price!

Rhodes -- high percentage of faculty brats
Eckerd College -- new and good
New College -- Florida school and very small in Sarasota
Rollins College -- just east of Orlando
Suwanee -- great school
Washington and Lee -- tradition
Davidson -- perhaps hardest to get into of the bunch
U Richmond -- good and has location for prelaw
Guilford -- great liberal feeling in NC
Elon - prettiest campus
Trinity -- TX
Florida Southern College -- Frank lloyd Wright architecture
Rice -- only 2900 but tough as nails to get into
Emory -- has Atlanta

The big schools of the south are much harder to get into today than just two years ago -- check the stats on U Miami, Vandy, Wake Forest -- even UF. The students admitted at those places this year are literally a head taller in academic accomplishment than their soon-to-be senior classmates.

FOB,

Son has NO interest in LACs. His sister is at Colgate and he isn't even interested in going up to visit. And it's not just the cold weather, since he said he'd go to UMich or Cornell if grades permit and he were lucky enough to get in.

What is he thinking about majoring in?

I always like to promote Louisiana Tech, but his possible major would be a big factor with them.

Well, a lot of the schools FOB posted are universities, not LACs, although they are universities that have very good liberal arts.

The University of Miami and the University of Florida seem to fit.
