Going back to the basics here, but is it better to have fewer EC’s that you really care about and show leadership in, or a wide variety that you truthfully do not care about? To get an idea, here is where I am at.
Leadership:
-Religious Youth Group
-Model UN
-Newspaper
Non-leadership, but still involvement:
-NHS
-Spanish Honor Society
-Student Ambassador
Maybe not the most extensive list, but I truly do care about all of these activities, they aren’t just a “show” for college. Thoughts?
Higher achievement probably helps the most in terms of ECs. For example, if you play a sport, winning a state championship certainly impresses more than not getting beyond local competition (even in the absence of athletic recruiting).
In cases where you’re limited on the number of ECs you can list, quality is obviously better. However quantity is very important. It’s odd, a lot of people seem to get the idea that colleges will frown upon some ECs for being “filler” but they really do want to see more involvement. Both are important, but don’t be afraid to list quantity.
The counselor at my school highly suggests that our applicants list only 5-7 ECs in which they
- Demonstrate the most leadership in
- Take the most time and effort out of their day
- Would most likely continue in college
We’ve had quite a few ivy-caliber school admits in the last few recent years. Then again, this could be due to the slight increase in the size of the student body.
quality is better than quantity 100 times out of 100
