quandary regarding IGETC

I'm probably worrying over nothing, but I just got to thinking after looking over my unofficial transcripts again. To satisfy Area 4 of IGETC--i.e. Social and Behavioral Sciences--it says to take three courses from at least two disciplines. So I took two classes from the History department and one from the American Studies department. The thing is, the American Studies class, which is interestingly the only class offered by that department, is called History of American Popular Culture. I'm hoping the UCs don't view the class as a History class: if they do, I won't qualify for IGETC certification (and I don't want to think about that ever being the case), due to said disciplinary stasis or whatever you want to call it.

Should I be worried?

It says from at least two disciplines, not departments. From the title of your American studies course, it looks like you won’t satisfy Area 4 of the IGETC.

An example of two different disciplines in Area 4 would be History and Psychology.

Use ASSIST.org to find out if you’re American studies course will satisfy Area 4, but judging from the title I don’t think it will.

I don’t think so.

I took the same class to fulfill the IGETC. At my college, it was called Intro to American Pop Culture and it was the only class offered by the American Studies department so yours isn’t an isolated case. American Studies is big enough to warrant itself its own major so I’m sure the UC’s won’t mistake that for a history course. It’s quite distinctive from the other history courses. But confirm with your college nonetheless.

Thanks guys.

I checked assist, and this is what came up:

AMER STU 7 History of American Popular 3 3B F08
Culture 4G F97

(weird formatting, but w/e)

It says the class satisfies areas 3B and 4G, so I suppose I’m safe, being that the History classes satisfy 3B and 4F.

And Karma, seeing that you’re a South Bay resident, I’m assuming you go to El Camino, too. If so, did you take the class with Ms. Brown? Awesome lady.
