i'm considering transferring into uchicago next year. BUT, i just found out that the school runs on quarters and not on semesters...which means no extended summer vacation...? that's not too intolerable i guess, but i'd like to hear opinions from current students.

Few students take courses summer quarter. The quarter system just means that each year you sit three 10 week terms instead of two 15 week terms. Summer break is something like 16 weeks.

Eh? The quarter system is aligned to the seasons, so there are four quarters: summer, autumn, winter, and spring. Regular tuition covers only the latter three quarters and most students do not take classes during the summer session.

Are you ever required to take summer classes? I know there are a few schools that have summer sessions that do require students to do so.

No.

(Message length!)

i know that there are some study sequences that are four quarters in length... like natural sciences. When do you end up taking that 4th quarter?!

The course spans multiple years.

Right, Diocletian, the course would go autumn-winter-spring, and then the next autumn.

Usually school ends around June 15 and starts again in late September or early October.

Also, how are "quarter hours" figured? I know NU goes by quarter hours to determine completion of a year of study. And also that if someone were to try to transfer there, that they require 36 quarter hours to be eligible. I was just wondering how UChicago would factor in there and whether a person would have to take 4 courses per quarter to satisfy NU's requirement. I mean, I hate to say it but I am considering a transfer to NU because of the film program and I am just curious if I could still take 3 classes the first quarter and then 4 the last two quarters at UChicago and still satisfy NU's transfer requirement?
