Hey all,
I'm curious about how the quarter system interacts with midterms, if every class must have them, and when midterms are. I understand how finals work (end of each quarter for each class), I'm just curious what the school's policy is on midterms.

They’re usually somewhere between 4th and 7th week, but occasionally can rear their ugly heads as early as third week or as late as eighth week.

Most classes have them. Some are tests during the class period, some are papers/projects. If a class has only one midterm it tends to be around 5th/6th week, but many classes have two midterms that, as HonorsCentaur said, can be as early as 3rd week and as late as 8th week (actually, I once had a 2nd math midterm during 9th week…it was really more of a practice final than a midterm).

While it can be annoying to have them so spaced out (it sometimes feels like you’re ALWAYS studying for exams), I do find that it helps prevent them from all clustering on the same day or in the same week, which for a procrastinator like me is a blessing. :)

…and the chemistry department is notorious for having exams during tenth week.

I prefer having one midterm per week to having three in a span of 2-3 days. Keeps the workload consistent (read: not overload)…

If you wanted the most extreme range - it would be 2nd-10th week (mostly due to the chem department), but most other classes would probably be 3rd-8th or maybe 9th. So, basically, “midterm” is a complete misnomer except in the rare case of a class that has only one exam 5th or 6th week, and then a final.
