So im going to be going to ucsd in the fall. Im looking at the course descriptions for chem and math. I was advised to not take chemistry the first quarter cause thats when all the really seriously competitive students take it. But the Quarter system confuses me.

I want to take 4 classes: muir writing, math 10A, vis arts 1

but the fourth...is it advisable wait to take chemistry second quarter and take a GE instead?

But because of the quarter system do they even teach the first of a series course second semester? meaning do they have Chem6A available second semester?

If i end up doing this, it would put me one class behind everyone.

And if I can do this, start the chemistry session second semester, what Social Science course is interesting and fun?

um, that advice is some of the worst i’ve ever heard. yeah, chem 6a (and every gen chem class) is offered every quarter, but by being off-track you’ll get almost no choice in class time or professor. how’s that for scheduling and picking the good/easy professors?

tritonlink.ucsd.edu, it shows you what classes were available by quarter last year.

Chem 6a is offered every quarter but, during the fall quarter, there will be around 5 different sections of it offered since that is when most of the students will be taking it. During winter and spring quarter, there will probably only be one section of it offered. That being said, taking it in the fall will give you the best opportunity to pick the professor you want and to make sure it fits in your schedule since there are so many sections to choose from. You don’t have to take it in the fall if you don’t want to since being behind isn’t the end of the world, but I would advise taking it in the fall.

I see your point. But what about competitiveness? Im not so good at chemistry but have to take the course. Wouldn’t it be to my advantage to take it in the winter?

or are you saying its better to have a good teacher with competitive students than a bad teacher with easy students?

no, you can only schedule one quarter (the next quarter) at a time, based on your registration appointment.

of course you want a good teacher. unless you’re great at learning everything on your own and can read the professor’s mind when it comes time for exams …

why are you convinced that a non-fall class would be easier? because it’s not. summer courses generally cover less material than their academic-year equivalents, but there’s no significant difference between the F/W/S quarters.

Its chem. Its going to be competitive no matter what. You’re now in the realm of all the extremely motivated students who want to go to the best grad school possible

If you don’t want a class to be extremely competitive in the science field… sorry, but you’ve picked the wrong school. It’s competitive every quarter. You can’t get around that.
