Quarter system

I have not seen anything recently on this. What do current students and recent grads think of the quarter system? It’s one thing that concerns me about Dartmouth. I know there are pros and cons – just wondering what most students think about it and also whether anyone decided against Dartmouth based in part on that.

I’m '19 at Dartmouth and the D-Plan is one of the main reasons I picked Dartmouth. The Quarter system allows students to be more competitive for internships since they’ll be available when typical applicants won’t be. Also I prefer not taking as many classes at a time. We typically take 3 classes a term. It allows me to focus on the subjects very deeply for a shorter amount of time, which helps if I don’t particularly like the class. Some people don’t like how they won’t always be on campus the same time as their friends, but you’ll still be with them during certain terms, like all of freshman and senior year and sophomore summer.

Thanks for the response. Makes sense.

Hey! I’m a '17 and I love the D-plan!!! I guess it is fast-paced, but because it will be the only college system you know, it will just seem normal. It’s also great because you get to decide when your “off-term”(essentially your “summer” break) is and participate in awesome internships! I took off Winter last year and worked at a federal agency (literal dream) and I studied abroad last spring and will be studying abroad again this upcoming spring! I feel like the D-plan allows us to do some crazy, amazing things and it is definitely one of my favorite aspects of Dartmouth!
