i know that a lot of colleges are on the quarter system (3 quarters a year instead of 2 semesters). why not just have semesters and whats the point of it? it seems like the quarter system just makes it easier to get a B :(

you have the ability to take more classes and if you get stuck taking a class you dont like its over in 10 weeks rather than 5 months.

There are pros and cons of both the semester and quarter systems.

mr18359 touched on a few of the pros.

1) The ability to take more classes- with three quarters in a regular school year, it is easier for students to take a wider variety of classes than they would in a semester system.

2) If you don't like the class, there is less time to deal with it. This also deals with if you hate the teacher, classmates, etc. Also, if, let's say, English isn't your favorite subject, you have only 10 weeks of the one english class and then you can skip a quarter before having to take it again.

3) I'm not sure if this goes for all the schools that are on quarters, but I know at OSU spring break is actually in between the Winter and Spring Quarters. This helps because you don't have to do much work during this time but can instead relax.

4) Easier to teach classes during summer. The classes are less condensed.
