Quarter System

Hey I was wondering about the quarter system at ucsd. I am used to the semester system from my high school, and was wondering if someone can provide some insight about what to expect about the quarter system. Is it harder? How many classes do we take? etc.

I believe it's harder since a lot more work is done in a shorter amount of time!! But WE CAN DO IT! WOOOOO!!

Four classes is standard. Three is the minimum to be considered a full-time student.

It's like having Haste casted on you continuously.

LOL, someone's been playing way too many games.

its not a big deal to adjust with
youll be fine =)

Everything comes on you really fast with the quarter system. Midterms in third week are pretty common for math and science classes. It's pretty relentless but there's always room for at least one week of complete apathy (ie. avoiding ALL work for the entire week). You'll manage.

it's fine. don't even worry about it. everybody's on the semester system in high school. i actually like it. i'm counting down the weeks right now haha.
8 more plus finals and i'm done with my first year.

love it so far.
oh by the way, during welcome week in september, make sure you participate in UnOlympics. don't stay in. get out there, get loud and have fun.
unOlympics roooooocks. we almost had it this year. gaah 6th college... >.>
we got second though so that's still something. (I'm in Warren)

im in revelle, bioengineering major:premed

so is there ever a chill time or is it very intensive all the time? and are tehre any breaks or anything, how many days a week do you have classes if you're taking 4?

with four classes, you'll probably have classes five days a week with an average of about 3 classes a day. if aren't picky about your professors though, it's possible to schedule your classes so that they fall on 3-4 days of each week.

People like to complain. They say the grass is greener on the other side. Quarter students say quarters are more intense than semesters. Semester students say semesters are harder than quarters.

If you've been out for a turn, having haste cast on you won't change anything. Analogously, once you get used to the quarter schedule, you'll be fine. If you're a capable student, you may not even be affected by summoning sickness your first quarter.

should a first quarter freshmen take 3 classes and a seminar/just 3 classes instead of four to help adjust to the college workload? or will 4 classes be okay?

what did you guys do when you first started?

my first fall-quarter schedule (revelle)

math 20b
chem 6ah
lifr 1d / 1dx
thda 1 (since renamed tdmv 1)

for a grand total of 15 units. :)

after five years of the quarter system at UCSD, i have to say that i miss it. here at columbia. the 15-week semesters just seem so wrong. about midway through, i start losing focus in class 'cause my short-term memory only lasts 10 weeks or so before purging everything.
