Quarter unit ranges?

Hi Stanford board - this may be a dumb question but I can't find info on this anywhere.

The school I got my BS & MS at was on the semester system, & units were very structured based on type of class/labs/etc.

My employer has me taking classes Stanford classes online, and I've noticed that a few of my options have ranges listed for the credit units. Ie 3-4 or 4-5. What exactly does that mean? And what differentiates a 4 credit class from a 5? Is it something you select when you enroll

Thanks!

Some courses have a variable workload for different number of units. However, in my engineering/CS course experiences, it’s more common that undergrads and NDO students are required to take the maximum number of units in the range, while grad students can be restricted to take fewer than the maximum for various administrative reasons or may choose to do so because of limits on number of units per quarter or cost.
