I've applied to UK and Canada for mechanical engineering as an international undergraduate student. I'm currently doing my A Levels. I've got offers from all the places(minus Queens) I applied to and now I'm having trouble picking which offer to go ahead with in Canada. I really want to go to Sheffield in the UK, but i don't think I'll be able to meet the conditions. So Canada it is.

I've also got a $16k scholarship from Alberta, but from what I've heard-Alberta's more known for petroleum engineering at bachelors. It's really hard picking which university to go to when you haven't been to any. lol

Queens(still waiting for offer) vs McMaster vs Alberta vs Calgary

which one is the best for mechanical engineering?
and which one do you think has the best campus, people, rez, etc?

Hi OptimusFried!
I have finished my application for engineering at university of alberta and I am going to send my transcripts soon.

I am a 2009 GCE a level results holder. Do I need to send my uk high school internal exam results as well ? Moreover, my IELTS result is slightly expired ( date of result release=11/03/09) , do u think they will accept this ? :C

thanks for your kind attention and gd luck to ur a levels !

sorry, forget to say that i didnt do O-levels

If Alberta is offering you that much i would seriously consider it…i dont know if you know this but all engineering programs in canada are all have to follow certain guide lines and are all accredited by i believe engineers canada…therefore no school is “better” then any other they are all similar…alberta would be great especially since they are lookin for engineers out there with oil sands and all…queens is a good school and nice i know people going there nxt year… if u want to stay here it doesnt matter where u go but im not sure which school is recognized more wherever ur from

hi aregular guy !
do u think i stand a gd chance if i have 2As2Bs and1C at GCE Alevel for alberta engineering ?

Thanks for the response aregularguy. I’ve narrowed myself down to Queen’s and Alberta. Working on financial plans at the moment and if they don’t look too good then it’s Alberta cause Queen’s is pretty expensive.

Taicheng@ dude you’ve got a good chance if getting in. I’ve known people get in with ABC at Alevel and without O levels(though they did another system which equal to Olevels). About your Ielts, ask the university. they respond pretty fast.

OptimusFried…

you are lucky I stumbled upon this thread…I used to live in Derby and moved to Edmonton about 3 years ago. I’ll try to give you as much advice as I about the UofA as we call the university here. a while back I tried to get onto the MSc in Mech Eng at the UofA…failed completely as I don’t have a BEng only a HND in Mech and a BSc in Product design. Anyway that’s old news. I have to say the facilities at the U are pretty amazing in comparison to most UK unis that I have been to. They have so much money coming in from the big oil companies that they have very good labs etc.

The major points that you have to bear in mind are: The Canadian undergrad degrees are 4 years and not 3 (mainly due to the waft of pointless courses in the first year such as sociology and psychology etc) Now the costs involved, the $16000 grant from the U is great but for course costs you are looking at around $21,000 per year (I got that from the uni website). Added to you living costs which are pretty high here in Alberta: to rent a room in a basement its $600-$750 per month, I live on my own and food costs me around $300 pm. This is just to give you a really good Idea of what it’s like.

I know it seems pretty expensive but what you get out of it is really invaluable! If you wish to stay here in Alberta and become an engineer you have to join the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta. You will be an engineer in training for 4 years then you can get full engineer status…engineers here are regarded like doctors or surgeons and as such can make some seriously big money. The experience that you could get here in the oil industry working on multibillion dollar projects will actually open so many doors for you where ever you may want to live. It’s a lot to digest really, but if you can afford it then you are in for some good times!

@expatweldor. I do know about the costs, time frame, etc and I do have enough financial resources to cover the four years, Though I’d be happing making some ‘extra’ money along the way for personal expenses, entertainment, etc. :D

thz for your help OptimusFried !

I experienced another problem, its that i have already left my uk high school for about 2 years and my high school didnt conduct internal exams, so im afraid that U of A might require my high school results for reference.

Is GCE results sufficient for referencing ?

thz dude !
