I am an international applicant. I asked my maths and physics teachers to write recommendation. From what they said they wrote very positively about me. Now to the query, the maths teacher asked me today about the process, whether he should send the letter directly to the college or he should send it to me and I would forward it to the college or he would have to register with colleges and all that stuff.

Forgive my naivety, but being an international, I have no idea about the process. Are recommendations sent through the Common App or directly to the college? Do my teachers have to register their emails somewhere? Could I forward it to respective colleges or whether they would have to do it themselves? ....thanks in advance

Did you add your teachers to the common app and add them as recommenders to each college you are applying to? When you do that, it should generate an email to your teacher with instructions that tell them how to upload the letter. It is possible to mail hard copies of letters to the admissions offices, but this would be much more labor and the cost/delay of international mail.

@VSGPeanut101 so basically I would have to ask for their email ID’s and then register them on common app and with the colleges…and after that they would receive emails instructing them how to proceed…right?

@VSGPeanut101 can I ask my previous for letters of recommendation or is it necessary to have current teachers.
One of my teachers taught me in 8th,9th and 10th…but not in 11th and 12th,but I asked him to write my letter because he knows me the best…would that count against me,as he has not taught me for the past two years?

^^That’s right.
^You can ask any teacher you want, but you are best advised to follow any hints that colleges give you. For example, some schools specifically state they want one humanities and one science/math. Some schools specifically say the teachers should be 11/12th grade. If they don’t have “rules” then you should use your judgement, and ask teachers who know you well and who can speak to what you will bring to the college classroom/campus.

@VSGPeanut101 sorry to pester you,but one last query…my physics teacher is awfully ancient, doesn’t have an email id or anything from what I found out today…he told me that he would write it and give it to me all signed and asked me to send it…would it be acceptable if I scanned it and sent it using my email ID?

@T26E4 but i am an international and mailing it to all the colleges(i am applying to 12) will prove to be very difficult…so could i send it via email…and keep the original document which i could mail if need arises or anything?..would it harm me if I email it from my mail?
