Hello all,
I've recently come to hear that UC Berkeley has, due to a funding issue, tweaked its admissions to make room for more international applicants, thus making it easier for them to make it there.
I am a International Applicant (Indian), living in the Middle East and I wish to pursue Mechanical Engineering (Undergrad) and have a SAT score of 2190, SAT 2 (Phy, Chem and Math II) score of 2300 along with competitive high school scores and some pretty awesome Extra Curricular activities to my name.
So I wanted to know whether or not I stand a good chance of getting in as compared to students of my stature who applied 2-3 years ago, because of the supposed ease in accepting International students.
Thanks and cheers.

If you take a look at the following link: [Profile of Admitted Freshmen, Fall 2012 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_fr/Frosh_Prof12.htm)

It shows that International applicants had an admit rate of nearly 30% for UCLA. I’m not sure if this will be the same for UCB. Berkeley does have a very selective program for Engineering, so the admit rate would probably be much lower than 30%.
Ostensibly, if you have a strong application, then you should be fine, but I wouldn’t sit in CC and debate whether chances/opportunities has increased for Internation applicants over the three years. From my perspective, your SATs adequate but from what I’ve heard, Cal looks for high GPAs.

I have a GPA of 10 out of 10 for grades 9 and 10 ( Indian curriculum)
And 88.2% in the 11th grade (top 5-10%)
should that suffice?

Bump! Bump!

Read on Cal’s website that admittance for internationals was 14%. I suspect engineering is going to be much harder.
To answer your GPA question, unless you ask an admissions officer, it’s gonna be hard to get an answer if you ask will xxGPA suffice, especially if you’re an international applicant. I’m not entirely sure how they convert all sorts of marks into UCGPA myself…

Thanks.
Do you by any chance know the kind of stats some of the current/past UCB students had?

They don’t release that info that I know of, but if your go to the Berkeley forum on this board, you may see threads where accepted students post their stats. Of course you will want to read through for the stats of the internationals which need to be much higher. Although additional internationals have been let in,there is no ‘supposed ease’, that would be a gross overstatement. It is a competitive pool with a high degree of selectivity and that is especially so for engineering.
