[ b]Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:**
I feel like I had very strong essays and stats lol. Also, my story is very unique and fits well with what QB is looking for I believe. So glad I got in!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

[ul]
[] SAT I (Comp, Essay, R/W, M ): 1330 composite, 7-7-6 essay, 670 R/W, 660 math. Got a 1430 on my next SAT but received that score shortly after the application deadline. 1450 PSAT (720 English, 730 Math)
[
] ACT (Comp, Essay, Eng, Math, Read, Sci): Did not submit but got a 29 on the pre ACT and a 34 on the ACT (again received shortly after the deadline)
[] SAT II (Type, Score): Did not take
[
] Weighted GPA (out of ??): 4.546 out of 5
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[
] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5 out of 321
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 4 on AP Human Geo, 5 on APUSH and English Language
[
] IB (place score in parenthesis): Not offered
[li] Major Awards: Outstanding achievement award in AP Human Geo, APUSH, Pre-Calculus Honors, AP Scholar, DAR American History Award, Honorable Mention in Senate Environment and Public Works at Harvard Model Congress 2019[/li][/ul]

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Harvard Model Congress Boston 2018 and 2019 (Captain of HMC team this year), Founded a food bank at my school sophomore year (founder, organizer, “president”), Varsity Cross Country freshman/sophomore year, varsity indoor and outdoor track freshman/sophomore year, varsity womens lacrosse as a starting defender junior year, Freshman Mentor, put caring for my household as an extracurricular as it takes up a sizeable chunk of time and keeps me from doing more stuff. I have more to put down but space was limited.
[
] Job/Work Experience: None, but as I stated I have to care for my household nearly full time
[] Volunteer/Community service: Founded a food bank at my school which serves some of the surrounding community, did some volunteer work with 5k’s at a local military base freshman year
[
] Summer Activities: Took 2 summer classes freshman and sophomore year, this summer I’ll be attending NC Governors School for English
[] Essays: Short answers: “concept or theory you’ve explored” was on segregation in schools today. Partly inspired by Stuyvesant, partly inspired by segregation in my county. Tied well into my political science theme and was well written so I’d say 9/10. “Experience that caused you to change your opinion” was on the 2016 election and how it sparked a passion within me for politics and public justice. Again, pretty good but kinda basic so 8/10. “What do you admire most about your community” was on how my town banded together to help a teacher who lost a parent after Hurricane Florence wrecked his hometown and ours. Pretty emotional so I’d say 10/10. My long essay was on how planning for a better future, finding self-motivation/drive to succeed, and focusing on school work/learning as much as I could as a child helped me navigate an abusive home life. Emotional, but not my best work after reading over it now. 7/10.
[
] Teacher Recommendations: I didn’t read my recommendation but it came from my AP Lang/Lit teacher who I work with on the food bank and whose class I did really well in. We have a good connection and I talk to him about a lot of things, plus he’s a strong writer so I’d say 9/10
[li] Counselor Rec: Don’t think this was required so I didn’t submit[/li][/ul]

Other

[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Rural North Carolina
[
] School Type: Public (about 1500 students from the “country”)
[] Ethnicity: White
[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: less than $20k
[
] Assets: None
[] Property: None
[
] Extenuating Circumstances: Single teen mother with no child support, have to act as a “second parent” to my siblings, mentally ill
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First gen college student, rural location, extremely low income[/li][/ul]

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments: I think my essays and recommendations were really strong and allowed me to explain why Questbridge was so important to help me succeed. I could demonstrate how driven I am to achieve my academic and career goals despite a kind of rough life and that’s what they like to see. I wish I could’ve waited longer to submit my higher test scores or gone back and re-submitted those because I was worried they may have been too low at the time. I submitted my application very last minute which had me worried also, but it all worked out! I applied for a few quest for excellence awards and the pioneer research programs but ended up getting nominated for free college visits, which I’m totally cool with! I would’ve liked to get into the pioneer research programs but I’m SUPER happy regardless. Congrats to everyone who got in and if you didn’t it’s okay! You’re all awesome no matter what

[
]Teacher Recommendations: I asked my Spanish teacher who knows me pretty well & I think he thought the rec through pretty well. He seems very thoughtful and I’m sure he wrote a good recommendation.

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:
I think I got in because of my stats like AP classes, GPA, and standardized tests. I also tried to write my essays and short-answers in an unconventional way, kind of like I’m telling a story or remembering a memory. I also tried to zone in on a few key interests and make myself seem like a well-rounded person. I was kinda surprised I got in bc I procrastinated on all the essays a lot and our income is fairly high for QB.

Congrats!!!

Might as well post my own lol

    [
] AP (place score in parenthesis): None, taking AP Biology and AP Literature rn tho
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
    [
] Major Awards: A+ Honor Rolls every year, Band Varsity Letter, just got inducted into NHS, Venture Scholar

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Pep Band, Mayo Volunteer Program, Key Club (Officer), Fall Musical (Stage Manager), Student Council (Representative), Concert Band
[
] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[] Volunteer/Community service: Key Club and my Mayo Volunteer Program mainly, I have over 100+ hours of service from the past three years. I serve a lot at mass too.
[
] Summer Activities: Mayo Volunteer, am hoping to pick up a job if my mom lets me.
[] Essays: My short answers honestly weren’t that strong. However, my 650 essay was very heartfelt and honest. I didn’t use complete formal language, so I think that personal vocabulary helped establish a personal connection to whoever critiqued my application. I also discussed a lot of cultural hardships between myself and the rest of my family.
[
] Teacher Recommendations: I waived my right to see my letter. However, my English teacher has always been close to me. He taught my brother prior to me becoming one of his students, so he got a good grasp of what I was going to be like before he met me.
[li] Counselor Rec: N/A[/li][/ul]

Other

[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Minnesota
[
] School Type: PreK-12 private Catholic
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: <15k
[
] Assets: None
[] Property: We own/rent a space for our business, but it hasn’t been doing well. Our house is 250k but it’s still on a mortgage.
[
] Extenuating Circumstances: My parents and I hold very different social beliefs, which makes us not very close to each other. I’m not allowed many liberties, as sexism runs through my family. I have to work for my mom, or even run her business because she likes to go shopping with basically non-existent money. She likes to go in the negatives in her bank accounts and then close her account = lots of debt. My brother, on the other hand, has no rules except for no tattoos or piercings. Cultural differences from being born in the U.S. is the main reason for my circumstances though.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not really URM #asian but I’m first gen student and child.[/li][/ul]

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:
I honestly couldn’t tell you. My application overall is not that strong, but maybe it’s because I was never really offered many opportunities in my school. I was very heartfelt in my 650 essay, and I feel as though my test scores were somewhat strong. Being discouraged academically by my parents may be also a “hook”, as my parents would deny any opportunity if it meant I was “better” than my brother. Overall, I don’t even know why I got accepted compared to other outstanding students, but I’m grateful nonetheless.

Decision: Accepted

[] Essays: 8/10 My biographical essay was pretty powerful and I really liked my short answers. I had two teachers and a friend look over it and edit too.
[
] Teacher Recommendations: 9/10 I didn’t read it but my lang teacher knew about my situation and is good with words.
[li] Counselor Rec: N/A[/li][/ul]

[] State (if domestic applicant): TX
[
] School Type: Pretty affluent, medium sized
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: 50,000>
[
] Assets: None
[] Property: Car and still paying off 250k house
[
] Extenuating Circumstances: Schizophrenic and bipolar mom, one income family of 6 (only my dad works), crazy medical bills from mom’s pregnancy and institutionalization,
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First gen college student, parents were immigrants from the Vietnam war[/li][/ul]

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments: Honestly no idea. I worked really hard on my essays but my SAT scores aren’t that good and my income is a little high too. I did talk about how since my mom was schizophrenic and bipolar that I had to take care of my 3 sisters (including a baby).

I applied for the humanities award and three summer programs but didn’t hear anything about that. I got invited to the college admissions conference at Pomona (prob can’t go because flights are $250) and nominated for free college visits.

I hope I do this right…

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

  • SAT I (Comp, Essay, R/W, M ): 1210 Comp, 6/6/7 Essay, 610 ERW, 600 Math
  • ACT (Comp, Essay, Eng, Math, Read, Sci): N/A
  • SAT II (Type, Score): PSAT, 1300 Comp, 680 ERW, 620 Math
  • Weighted GPA (out of ??): 4.6 out of 4.6 (gpa is ranked weird at my school)
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 out of 44
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A, my school offers neither AP or IB
  • Major Awards: principal’s leadership award, community service award, English award, publication in local magazine, publication in community college magazine, AEC ambassador award, student council award, beta award (these are all major given the location from which I come because there isn’t much opportunity)

Subjective:

  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): beta club (president), ambassador, PRIDE club (founder and advisor), church choir, local nursing home volunteer, local teen poetry club, student council (vice president), interact club
  • Job/Work Experience: I’ve worked at Bojangles since last November (the earliest I could get a job) and started my own local tutoring business (eight clients a week)
  • Volunteer/Community service: local nursing home, Habitat for Humanity, backpack program for children in need of food, Beta club fundraisers and drives (100+ hours)
  • Summer Activities: N/A, just work
  • Essays: I would honestly give my biographical essay like a solid 5/10 because I talked way too much about my mother and not about myself, but I made up for it in my short answers which really conveyed my passions and interests
  • Teacher Recommendations: 11/10, it’s my English teacher, and she’s been so understanding of the situation from which I come that she’ll do anything to help me. She spent four weeks writing my recommendation because she wanted it to be the best it could be.
  • Counselor Rec: N/A

Other

  • State (if domestic applicant): NC
  • School Type: Early College
  • Ethnicity: Latina, Race: African American
  • Gender: Female
  • Income Bracket: $29K
  • Assets: $1000 from food stamps
  • Property: I really don’t know. I know that sounds stupid but it’s my grandparents’ house and they owe a lot of back taxes on it so I never got a good estimate.
  • Extenuating Circumstances: single parent home, income covers eight people, come from a rural community with very little opportunity
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): first-generation college student

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments: I’m not sure. I was pretty certain my biographical essay paired with my low test scores would equal my rejection, but I don’t have the money for test prep courses or resources. I have to work all the time to take care of my family, two little siblings included. I think they saw through my short answers how passionate I am and maybe a spark within me. My income being so low definitely played a part in it, but I think they ultimately just saw I’m doing the best I can given my circumstances and I will take advantage of any opportunity thrown my way.
