Questbridge College Prep Scholars 2017 Applicant Thread

@Naperthrill I’ve been thinking about that but then I kept thinking that didn’t talk about the state it was more about the town. I think I’m just gonna talk about my town. I’ve been sitting here forever trying to think of something. Thanks!

@Naperthrill I couldn’t go to any of the summer programs so I’m not sure how long those take. I think for the essay as long as you know what you are going to write about you can get a decent essay in.

Finally submitted the app. I’m not really proud of my essays tbh I am a terrible writer. I’m not too optimistic, but only time can tell ig.

Really glad for the Questcasts they were super helpful. If I didn’t watch them I’d be even more screwed for the essay.

I just submitted my application. I think my essays were strong, but my accreditation? Not so much. The section where you’re supposed to list awards you’ve gotten during high school is dry for me. Hopefully that won’t negatively sway my application too much. :-S

Did any of you submitted a PSAT 10 score? Do you think Questbridge would want to see it?

I didn’t take the PSAT 10, but I submitted my ACT score, PSAT score, and then two ACTs and one SAT that I am signed up to take.

@ming3282 I submitted it to show how I improved. I would recommend submitting it, especially if your PSAT score was significantly higher than your PSAT 10 score.

Submitted! I applied to the Quest STEM award, but I didn’t write anything in the proportion for STEM summer programs(those “why are you interested in this program”). I thought I’m supposed to wait.

Is it bad that I didn’t select any of the summer programs or say that I wanted to go the QB CPS conferences? All the conferences are too far away for me to travel to and I can’t do any summer programs because I’m taking Driver’s Ed and a graduation requirement course over the summer.

Will they look at my application differently because I don’t show interest in attending these programs? (I’d actually love to go, but I can’t because of my prior commitments.)

@HappySquirrel I believe that portion of the application is due on April 9th.

@Naperthrill I think they had stipends available if you couldn’t afford to travel. Are you in the continental United States?

@Naperthrill I didn’t apply for any of that stuff either. I have summer school. so it just wouldn’t work. I was going to put that in my additional information section but then I decided it wasn’t significant enough.

@hamolton I think the summer programs cover travel and stuff, but the conferences do not cover travel. Though they have stipends for travel I think I read on the website that they are super limited because they are a nonprofit and don’t have that kind of money.

Several students last year were awarded a $250 travel stipend to attend a conference. I think it really depends on where you are located whether attending a conference is practical. If you are from the Midwest for example, you are not getting to CA, CT, or GA for $250 round trip, plus you wouldn’t be able to manage the travel in one day anyway.

Everyone probably has already submitted at this point, but the state awards are only ONE per state. My S was struggling with the state essays when I discovered that information, so he quickly abandoned those prompts.

@Naperthrill If you don’t mind me asking, if you have no interest in the summer programs or the conference, what are you hoping to get out of the program if selected? I am just curious because those are the only reasons my S applied-I really don’t really see any other benefits?

I haven’t seen any actual numbers anywhere, but just combing through old threads here it seems like almost no one gets the summer programs though. I am thinking there might be just a couple of slots for each program.

@Hamlon Yes, but I’ve already submitted the application so it may be too late.

Edit: I just read the comment @kassh4 left, and I definitely remember reading something like that. Actually, I think that’s initially why I didn’t mark that I was interested in going to a conference.

@planner03 I want to go into computer science and the award for $1000 in new technology really piqued my interest. I know it’s not likely that I’ll be selected for that award, but I really need a laptop capable of running programming applications that I cannot run with my ~$200 Chromebook (which is now broken with repair costs valued higher than the computer itself). I wrote essays for all the awards sections that were applicable to me (STEM, USA and New Americans) in the hopes of improving my chances.

I also think the title of “QuestBridge Prep Scholar” has value all on its own.

@planner03 Is there seriously only one winner to the State award. I was struggling so hard with it, I but didn’t want not to do it because I already wasn’t applying for any of the summer programs. I’m just trying to get a head start on QB because the QB match program has a very similar application I heard.

@naperthrill good luck with the computer-I sure hope you get it!

@kassh4 yes I clicked into the description of each individual award just a couple of days ago and stumbled across that info-it said the state awards are for the top student in each state.

Good luck to everyone!

Wait so how do we complete the supplemental information for the QFE Stem award if the application is not open for editing?

@solarsystem If you log in to your questbridge account and hit open application there is an option for submitting supplemental information for the summer programs on the very front page.

@kassh4 Thanks, I had to log out and re-log in to see it
