Questbridge College Prep Scholars 2018 Acceptances/Results

Oh and I didn’t get an award ^

hmmmm I was really hoping to get the essay tutoring… @studythisorthat were you essays really good or did you do them like last minute (like i did), maybe that’s how they decide? I don’t think I can go to the conference (in rice) and th only other thing I applied to was the QEA in STEM so idk how else they are going to help me out if they didn’t give me the essay tutoring thing???

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:
I didn’t have any single weak area in the app, but a lot of the application was mediocre for me. The fact that our school is highly competitive probably helped me a little bit regarding my GPA and grades, and I was really proud of my biographical essay. I still have a lot of work to do before NCM however.

Congrats to everyone else accepted!

[ b]Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:**
After looking at the thread, dang my test scores were low. It showed that the essays really do make an application different. Financial burdens also played a role in why I got it even though my parents (even though they are divorced) combined income was about 100k. Also me working so my family has 1 less worry of money to pay (7 kids total from both families).

I only gave her a week to write the recommendation so I’m not sure how well it turned out, but she used to be an English teacher so I presume that she wrote a good letter.

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:
I think I was accepted because of my short answers and essay paired along with my decent GPA and SAT scores. I was honest with my responses and I demonstrated my interest in computers and technology, in general, all the while making it seem interesting.

I’ve been lurking on the QuestBridge threads since the application opened up, but I figured I should get a little bit more active! Congrats to everyone who made it! To those who didn’t, I hope you guys don’t get discouraged for NCM or other applications, I wish you all the best!

    [
] Summer Activities: I usually did an extra class or two over the summer because I love learning and hanging out/spending time with my family, but now I can add volunteering to that list!
[] Essays: I had a continuous thread of my interest in psychology (which was also my stated intended major and top career choice), helping others (and animals!), and how I feel about my family. I enjoyed the cohesiveness of themes however I think I could have done better writing them. While I had them outlined for 2 weeks, I wrote them the night before the application was due and did not proofread as much as I should have. Overall 7/10.
    [
] Teacher Recommendations: The teacher I picked for my rec is one I’ve had for 3 years now! He knows me very well as he’s the one who works with me for History Fair and I’ve been in all of his AP classes. I’m positive he did an amazing job but for a little wiggle room, 9/10.

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:
I think test scores, recommendation, GPA, and the various extracurriculars put me in the running. After looking at this thread, I know I have less outside activities but I think my time and motivation dedicated to them really showed through in my application. I’d like to think the cohesiveness of essay themes with decent writing also played a role, but again I think some of them were a bit more rushed and less attention was paid to them for me to 100% consider them. For NCM and other apps, I definitely want to pay more attention to my essays and maintain cohesiveness in both themes and in writing quality.

Extenuating Circumstances: just having anxiety really
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): immigrant, ESL student, low income, being motivated and dedicated to service and helping others and how that has always played a key role in my life

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments:
I guess my application was a good showcase of myself as a student and also a person. My essays def helped me a lot in doing this and also I am very well rounded which I tried to stress as much as possible.

(I am honestly really nervous to post this because I feel like my stats seem like nothing compared to everyone else but I am still proud of myself for getting in so here we go!) (Please don’t judge me lol)

Decision: Accepted!!!

Objective:

  • SAT I (Comp, Essay, R/W, M ): Haven’t taken yet but I submitted my 1240 (maybe 1260, I don’t remember but it doesn’t make a difference) on my PSAT which I did absolutely horrible on because that day was a mess for me honestly. Needless to say, this score was definitely a detriment to my application :’-(
  • ACT (Comp, Essay, Eng, Math, Read, Sci): Just took last week (ahh!)
  • SAT II (Type, Score): Have not taken yet
  • Weighted GPA (out of ??): 4.24 (on a 5.0 scale)
  • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
  • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/145
  • AP (place score in parenthesis): All four of our APs are only offered senior year at my school :frowning:
  • IB (place score in parenthesis): None (not offered at my school)
  • Major Awards: Not too many major awards but I have had perfect attendance since kindergarten, maintained distinguished honors (honor roll), am a member of the National Honors Society, Certificates of Distinction in Spanish I, Geometry, and American History, and the Widener University High School Leadership Award (and scholarship)

Subjective:

  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Student Council (President 9-11 Grades), All-City Philadelphia Orchestra (Violin 2- 10th Grade, Violin 1- 11th Grade), Philadelphia Young Musicians Orchestra, Mathletes Team (Co-Captain), and National Honors Society. (Just for reference I am also a member of my school’s Quizbowl team and Junior Prom Committee as well as various other orchestras but I did not put these on my application.)
  • Job/Work Experience: I am in a string quartet that plays both paid and volunteer performances at public schools around my city. Also, I have tutored a couple students in Algebra 1/2 and Geometry
  • Volunteer/Community service: I volunteer with my string quartet and walk rescue dogs at my local greyhound shelter every week
  • Summer Activities: I attended the University of Pennsylvania Summer Mentorship Law Program the summer before tenth grade, the University of Pennsylvania Mathematics Summer Academy as well as the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY) the summer before eleventh grade.
  • Essays: 20/10, I worked so incredibly hard on them and I’d definitely say the biographical essay was the best thing I have ever written.
  • Teacher Recommendations: Most likely 10/10, my teacher knows me very well and was excited to write my recommendation
  • Counselor Rec: N/A

Other

  • State (if domestic applicant): Pennsylvania
  • School Type: Special admissions public school for the arts (I major in instrumental music: violin)
  • Ethnicity: White
  • Gender: Female
  • Income Bracket: <$45,000
  • Assets: Absolutely none
  • Property: None
  • Extenuating Circumstances: My mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently out of work for a few months healing from a double mastectomy. (I explained this in the additional information section of the application.)
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I am a first gen and a female going into STEM

Why you think you were accepted/not accepted and general comments: Honestly I really dedicated myself to making sure my essays were top notch to make up for the lack of test scores and AP/IB courses offered at my school. Every activity and interest I included in my application is something I am extremely dedicated and passionate about so I hope that came through to those reading my application. I was so nervous to apply because I thought they’d never accept me with me only being able to take a few honors courses in my small arts school but I made sure to communicate that I am taking the more rigorous coursework I can while focusing heavily on my extracurriculars and passion for playing the violin.

@celestialkairos My son went through this process last year and it seems like a lot of people who had excellent stats, like you, were rejected. Maybe Questbridge thinks you will have no trouble getting into these schools without their help? Don’t let it discourage you. Only 1/2 of the people selected to be Qbridge finalists get chosen by colleges. If we had it to do all over again, I don’t think we would go the Questbridge route. For those who aren’t chosen, like my son, it is a rough roller coaster ride of emotions. You can get a scholarship package similar to the Qbridge scholarship by applying (and getting accepted) to any of the “need fully met” colleges. Good luck!!
