Why do you think you were or were not selected as a finalist?
My essays kicked BUTT. I had been working on this application since it came out in late May and went to the Writing Center as soon as the school year started because the consultants are awesome. They guided me to making coherent thoughts in my short answers and long essays. I stated that 14,000 Things to Be Happy About and The Kneebone Boy by Ellen Potter were my favorite books, American Psycho and Ratatouille are my favorite movies, and I even cited comedian Bill Hicks as the reason why I’m so open-minded about the controversial subjects today (even though he’s been dead for 22 years). I even wrote my second essay about how I crushed an entire grade’s spirits on Spirit Day during a trivia competition. Every time I look at all of my writing components of this application, I beam with pride.
I also talked about how I drew butterflies on a friend’s self-harm scars when we were freshmen and she really appreciated what I did. I also answered “How do you spend a typical weekend?” by starting off with “I like to catch up on sleep after five days of working hard and playing hard in school.” (apparently Questbridge likes Wiz Khalifa)
My counselor also asked me about how I’m financially deserving of this opportunity (to write in the school report). My mom got fired from her old job at the post office six years ago and found employment five years ago. I got a 29 on the ACT because I essentially had to scavenge for old ACT books. I don’t know if I also told her this, but I even went to the library and found a TON of ACT tip books, especially Princeton Review’s ACT Crash Course book that I credit for helping me boost my math and science scores.
Lastly, I lowkey think I became a finalist because I submitted this on September 22. I seem to get rejected from things if I submit things the day before or the day of a deadline.
In summary, I think I became a Finalist because I have a colorful personality, scavenged for test prep books, and my ECs.
A song once told me to “never G-I-V-E U-P and keep your H-E-A-D U-P” (“Fabulous” by Jaheim). You could have… interesting… grades like me and still become a finalist, you guys!
