Questbridge National College Match 2011-2012

This might have been mentioned before, but if you apply to be Matched, can you still apply EA/ED to other schools that aren’t on QB?

No, you can not EA/ED to other colleges that are not part of QB.

Is there any way I might be able to access last year’s College Prep app? I was stupid and didn’t save the essay…

This not necessarily true and it depends on the deadlines for the other schools. My son applied through Questbridge and chose to be be matched. He found out he wasn’t selected as a finalist prior to the EA deadline of our state college and was able to submit his application for EA. Finalists are notified by October 21st so as long as you are not selected as a finalist and your other colleges EA/ED deadline is after that date you are fine. See excerpt below:

If I participate in the College Match process, can I also apply to another college via Early Decision or Early Action?

A: If you choose to rank one or more colleges (regardless of whether each college is binding or non-binding) for the College Match, you may not apply to other colleges through Early Decision or Early Action. Since the College Match is a binding early admission program, applying to both QuestBridge and another program early would violate the agreement with the other program. If you submit a QuestBridge application but do not become a finalist (notification of finalist status will occur on October 21, 2011), then you are released to apply to any college Early Decision or Early Action.

Students are encouraged to apply to other colleges through the Regular Decision process. However, if you are matched with one of our partner colleges, you will need to withdraw all of your regular applications.

If you decide not to rank any colleges for the College Match process, you are still welcome to apply and use our application forwarding service for the Regular Decision process. Please review the profiles of each of our partner colleges on our website for more information.

Can I apply EA to Caltech (a partner college) and also participate in the matching process? The reason I ask is that Caltech is binding in Questbridge while EA is not binding.

If you read my post above you know the answer, No and I would not recommend participating in the College Match process for any college you wouldn’t plan on attending if matched. However, if you are not selected as a finalist it’s a moot point and you can apply ED or EA to any college you wish. The bonus is that some of the QB colleges will waive your application fee for QB applicants. To me, the only reason NOT to apply through QB is if there is a school you definitely want to go to if accepted that is not n the list of QB schools. Otherwise, the benefits far outweigh the negatives. If you do make finalist but are not matched all of the colleges on QB will waive their application fee. That is a huge savings if you want to apply to multiple schools.

Is there any way I could take another subject test for a QB school, or does everything have to be in at the deadline? The earliest SAT date is October 1st. :|

From QB http://www.questbridge.org/for-students/ncm-faq#requiredtests</a> (FAQs)
Q: I won’t have my standardized test scores before the College Match deadline. Can I still apply?

A: QuestBridge will accept any test scores that you receive prior to the National College Match application deadline of September 30. If you do not have any test scores available for the September 30 deadline (i.e. you are taking the SAT/ACT for the first time in senior year), you can still apply to QuestBridge and it is still possible to be selected as a finalist if the rest of your application is very strong.
If you expect to receive scores after September 30, please list your testing date(s) on the Testing Information page in the application, leaving the score fields blank. In order for your test scores to be considered by QuestBridge colleges for the College Match, you must take any required test(s) no later than October. Any testing done after October will be considered only in the Regular Decision process.
If you are selected as a finalist and rank colleges for the College Match, you should request that the College Board and/or ACT forward your official score reports to your ranked colleges by their required College Match deadlines.*
Please visit the standardized testing page for more information.

Did anyone start on the essays yet? Which one are you guys going to tackle first?

This may sound a little absurd, but
…say someone is a finalist plus gets matched to a school they actually “like” but is NOT their FIRST CHOICE. Is it possible to opt out completely from QB and apply RD to other schools? I’ve tried to search everywhere on the QB site but this type of question is nowhere to be found…I would email QB but i fear I might get “blacklisted” (I know its unlikely, but just to be safe). I mean, I probably wouldn’t do such a thing I describe here, but it would make me feel more comfortable to know the answer to this Q.

Thanks in advance

@STEM,
From [Application Process: The National College Match](http://questbridge.org/for-students/ncm-college-match-process)

“Because the National College Match is a binding process, you should make sure you are interested in attending our partner colleges before applying. “Binding” means that if you are selected for a scholarship through the College Match, you will be required to attend the college you were matched with. (There are 5 exceptions to this rule: MIT, Notre Dame, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale. If you are matched with any of these 5 colleges, you are not required to attend.)”

So QB makes it clear that you should only list a college for the Match that you will attend if accepted. The QB Match is like applying through early decision; if accepted, you have agreed to go. It is binding for every college you list and may be matched with (except for the 5 non-binding ones), wherever that college is on your list. Of course, no one can “make” you attend a college you don’t want to go to, but other colleges will treat your application as though you were accepted ED to another college - and they do know.

So the answer to your question is no, but you shouldn’t be afraid to email QB for help. They really are friendly and helpful.

thanks a lot scoutsmom

And this may be a tad off topic, but: you say that no one can “make” me attend a college. Not that I plan on doing this, but say I apply to QB or individually ED someplace else but I opt out completely. Will other colleges that I subsequently apply to hold this against me? (I’m assuming they will, I don’t know why I’m really asking that…but my next question please) And in what way?

For those of us that received the Questbridge Conference and a Prep Program, does that at all factor into the College Match? Basically what I’m trying to say is, are we a sure lock for finalists?

@STEM, Since my son applied through QB, I have no experience with ED. But I know you sign an agreement to attend a binding school for the QB match, and if you violate that agreement your acceptance can be withdrawn, both for the Match school and the one you eventually decide to attend, if they find out. You might want to search CC to find more info on violating ED.

I’ve seen a really helpful post on the idea of not having test scores back in time for the application. I have a decent score for the ACT+writing (32), but I am taking the SATs for the first time in October. Would I be at a disadvantage because I don’t have SAT IIs? Also; I literally found this program today and had no idea that I would need letters of recommendation. What should we ask the teachers to say that would be considered more than average praise? And how many and from whom should we have letters (counselor, specific type of teacher, etc)?
Thanks for this awesome thread  it’s helping me understand so much more about QB!

^

A 32 is a very respectable score for QB. Since it is with writing, almost every school will not need SAT II’s (check each school, I believe it is one of the HYP’s that doesn’t take the ACT in lieu of SAT II’s.)) Have you taken them yet? What are the dates you were planning on taking the SAT and II’s?

As far as the rec’s go, ask the teachers that you have the best relationship with, tell them about QB and ask if they would be able to write a “positive reccomendation” for you. You can provide them with what is known as a brag sheet…basically your academics, EC’s, awards etc. to help them while writing your letter. You will need 2 teachers and your GC. Good luck.

^ Thank you! Honestly if I get into QB, Yale will be my first choice (and perhaps only.) I am taking the SATs in October, but I haven’t registered for any SAT IIs. I am considering Math 1/2 and Literature. I’m unsure about if I can be considered a full need student. I am a TRiO participant, and while my EFC isn’t 0, it isn’t high at all.

I’m just wondering, to all of you who participated in the College Prep Scholarship Program, will you be blacklisted if you got invited to one of the Questbridge Conferences and didn’t attend? I applied for a grant and got 300 dollars which would have been enough for myself but it said a parent was required to come unless there was a special circumstance. I would have been to scared to travel by myself and my mom couldnt afford to come so I didn’t go even though I rsvped. Will this ruin my chances for the College Match Scholarship?

If you’re a QB finalist, are you still allowed to submit different/edited essays for RD?

will the teacher evaluations from the college prep scholarship still be there to reuse in the college match? my teacher saved the recommendation but did not save all the other miscellaneous questions, which according to him was extremely tedious.
