Finalist 3.5 gpa, amazing essay, great recommendation. No test scores.

Results thread opened!!! :D

Omar9714, we’re practically twins:

FINALIST!
Percentile Rank: Top 8%
GPA: 3.6 (u), 4.79 (w)
SAT/ACT: NONE
7 APs by graduation!
AP Scores: World History (3); US History (3); Lang/Comp (5)

I did two things that (I think!) made my application stand out:

@honeybee63 I really appreciate the response as it seems like sometimes no one is there to provide feedback XD. My main loss in my opinion is that you can’t get rejected through QB. I’m still trying to decide whether I want to apply EA or RD, unfortunately my dream school is MIT and it provides no incentive for EA This sucks trying to analyze the cost benefits of applying EA.

FINALIST YOOOO !

I’m very grateful ! My stats:

ACT: 27
SAT: 1650
GPA Weighted: 96%
1 AP during junior year (got a 3) (AP USH)
Currently taking 5 APs
Family income: $26,000

Yeah . I’m not your average CCer with the greatest stats . Just shows that it comes down to many different things . Not just perfect standardized test scores, 25328 APs, all 5s in AP Exams, and a 100 GPA .

I just showed real growth and passion. I talked about my passion for learning and for Track and Field .

So for future applicants, don’t be discouraged by your imperfect stats . KNOW YOUR WORTH ! These tests don’t tell you your worth. Your essays will show the colleges how much you know about yourself.

Steven: This is just an educated GUESS, but I think many do not make the finalist cut because of income-for example, although their parents might be unemployed, they live in a 500K home. Also: for those who are low income, (and not star athletes) have you held at the very least summer jobs? (thereby showing that you are willing to try to do something about your status) I know of one QB applicant who was not only valedictorian, but worked full time at Kentucky Fried Chicken. He was matched to Columbia.
The other thing that can hurt an application is…BS. I know a guy who I think should have made the cut, but he claimed to be captain of his tennis team for four years. (Generally this is reserved for juniors and seniors)This kind of stuff-small as it is…is offputting and suspicious. And his other interest was competing in dressage. Now, how many low income folks do you know who compete in dressage?
The other thing: Some times people just slip through the cracks. Period. It is just dumb bad luck.
As far as MIT: Go for it. Most are deferred anyway-except for what I would call the SUPER GENIUS. (2400 on SATs, national champions in Chem, Math competitions etc., spectacular national science or math awards …and so on) If you get in, MIT will work with you.

Good luck to any one who did not getting? You will get over it one day I hope so be happy for the one who got in. Finalist there is still work to do.

guys, post on the official questbridge finalist thread 2013-2014 !!
Congrats to all those who became finalists and to those who weren’t accepted, I’m sure the QB staff thought you guys were better off on your own. So no need to be sour. Good Luck to all in this college admission journey !!

Finalist, but I already said that. XD Here are my general stats:

GPA: 4.0 uw/ 5.02 w
SAT: 2130 (1420 CR + M), 10 Essay
SATII: 770 BioM, 740 Lit, 730 MathII
ACT: 29 (did not submit, but retaking)
APs: Human Geo(5), World(4), Lit(5), Psych(5), Bio(4), USH(5)
Senior schedule: AP Calc AB, AP Spanish IV, AP Physics B, AP Lang and Comp,
AP Euro History, AP Gov’t, AP Econ
Awards: AP scholar w/ distinction, Nat’t Achievement, Centre Fellow, more…

Main EC: Philosophy (long story XD), Student Council, Key Club, MUN, much more…

I’ll post a more comprehensive stat sheet later on. Good luck to everyone! :)

FINALIST!!!:
4.0 GPA (my school doesn’t weigh);
2190 SAT (800 Math woot); 1500 (M+CR)
800 Math Level 2
710 Physics
7 APs (5 self studied): 4s and 5s
Average ECs for CC standards (decent amount of leadership positions in stuff I really care about). Two jobs=34 hours a week; pushes 40 during the summer
Pretty Good essays and recs (teachers showed them to me).

US citizen but my parents are citizens of the Trinidad and are Caribbean (I think this qualified me as a URM?)

Income: <2k and a couple of useless assets (there is a very logical explanation for why my parents make under minimum wage if you were wondering).

School: Rural failing High School; my school has a drug problem.

I want to congratulate all the finalists. You truly deserve this!!! To the non-finalists: everything will be okay. There have been people who have gotten into amazing schools like Yale, Princeton and Stanford after a rejection from Questbridge. Don’t give up, you are all capable of amazing things and nothing but amazing things lie in your future. I hope you all will go out there and continue your amazing accomplishments. As high achieving low income students, we have went through terrible tragedies and events. In face of these circumstances, we have rose up and achieved what seemed impossible to many. When I say these words, I address both finalists and nonfinalists. We are all high achieving low income students and we must fight this admission cycle to prove just what we are made of.

Sorry for the rambling. It is 1:15 am here and half of my brain is asleep.

Congratulations to all finalists! I was chosen despite my 3.2 GPA; I guess it really does go to show that you never know what they’re looking for.
To those who weren’t chosen, I heard that this was an incredibly competitive year, and I’m sure y’all will do perfectly well on your own. <3

@Steven 200796, @ kryanchun and other non-finalists,
No one who wasn’t in the room when apps were discussed is going to be able to explain it to you. Every year this happens and many qualified applicants are baffled about their status. I’ve noticed that those who allow themselves to feel disappointed/sad/mad for a little while and then get on with applying to colleges (ED/EA or RD - whatever makes sense for you) have great outcomes. The students who get immersed in a ‘QB sucks’ funk or who take this as a final pronouncement don’t do as well.

^^^^I echo this sentiment. My son was not selected as a finalist last year. He is a URM, 3.96 (UW), 4.96 (W), 32 ACT etc… We were both very surprised when he was not selected. Literally, the same day as the announcement, when I was questioning the decision my son shrugged and said, “who knows why mom, but it doesn’t matter why.” The next day he changed his common app to SCEA, polished his essays and short answers, applied to Yale SCEA, was accepted and now attends Yale.

Take a day to mourn the results and then keep going. The plus is that you are already ahead of the game. You have completed your essays and now you only have to polish them and submit them!

For all the finalists, do we have to send another match agreement form even if our rankings didn’t change?

@amattes: No.

I don’t know if they got my transcripts yet… I just hope that the mit site is going to be updated by tomorrow.

Does anyone know what time on December 2nd Questbridge match results come out? Or even when they came out last year.

No idea here, but expect it by 3pm the latests. That’s when they come out with the finalists results anyway…

Although, if you got matched you might receive a call from the college you got matched with. Can’t really say this for EVERYBODY who is matched, but I’ve heard it happened to a few.

[Bradley Jean-Baptiste](QuestBridge)

Anyhow, good luck to all! Can’t wait to analyze the results later to get my sister ready…

…less than a week left guys… oh the wait…

3 more days left people!! Woot woot
