QuestBridge National College Match 2014-2015

EDIT; nevermind. Found the answer to my question haha.
Good luck to all of us! Now to start ranking schools. I need to get 2 SAT subject tests done but I have no more waivers since my school gave each student 2 and I took the SAT twice. : (

How many schools are you guys ranking? I’m thinking about doing only the 4 nonbinding schools, but I’m not sure if this is practical or not.

Probably 1 or 2, I’m also part of POSSE (for now, waiting on Semi-Finalist results…) and my #1 school out there is Mount Holyoke. I’d rank more but my issue is that I missed the SAT subject tests deadline to have the results by the November 1 deadline if I were to get matched. The next test date is on November 8. It’s really sad because I would’ve really liked to try and get matched to Pomona and Vassar but I’m pretty overwhelmed and stressed so maybe it’s for the best, studying for the subject tests on top of everything. I also was having issues because my family can’t afford to pay for the tests right now and I had already used up my 2 SAT test waivers that were offered by my school.

Although the financial aid package won’t be as great (though might still be pretty good), RD is less risky if you really want to go to an outside college. Either way, I think I’m a bit ahead in the college process compared to my peers who didn’t do Questbridge so I gained at least something as a result of all of the stress.

@nrnr29 Re: fee waivers, College Board guarantees FOUR fee waivers per student, 2 for the SAT and 2 for SAT IIs. You can take 3 SAT IIs each testing date, so you have up to 6 FREE SAT IIs. Your school cannot decide not to provide these fee waivers. If you can’t get one from your school, contact the College Board directly!!! Fee waivers are in place so students like you who can’t afford testing won’t be disadvantaged in the admissions process.

From CB website: <<you can="" use="" up="" to="" two="" waivers="" for="" the="" sat="" and="" subject="" tests™.="" that’s="" a="" total="" of="" four="" fee="" (up="" three="" tests="" per="" test="" date).="">></you>

Also, remember that the QB finalist designation is a national award so make sure to list that on your Common Apps and other scholarship applications.

I also have 2 fee waivers for SAT 2’s but I’m using my second SAT waiver and since the SAT 2’s are on the same date I can’t take them until next timee

Do you guys think many people applied this year?

The number of people who applied is probably similar to last year. Does QB care about geographic diversity? Cuz I don’t think there’s ever been more than 2-3 applicants from my state yearly.

@tetrisfiend‌ I don’t know but last year there were a lot of people from my state and one guy even won from my school! I’m hoping I will be as lucky because we have a similar rank/gpa

So, which schools are you guys matching?

My dream school is Mount Holyoke and I’m applying to it whether I get into it through POSSE or not, however I’m so scared of not making it through POSSE or not getting accepted through regular decision (or getting accepted and not being able to afford it and God knows my family can’t)…so I’m matching Scripps just in case. I’d match Northwestern and Stanford, but though I believe myself to be smart and hardworking to a certain degree, I feel like I would feel left out in those schools because it’s on an entirely different level. I want to grow and mature a lot but at a pace that I can manage so that I can actually reflect on my development every now and then, haha.
Well this is all assuming I become a finalist, which is really tough to say. It’s all so risky. I get the Finalist results from Questbridge only 3 days later before getting the POSSE results. Sigh. We don’t find out if we’re matched on October 21st though, right? Or do we? I’m still a bit iffy.

Honestly having a tough time with the process, but I’m giving myself about 8 days to really decide. Looking forward to hearing all of you guys out, and to let out any anxiety and/or stress here on this thread when it gets tough. :)

I applied to Questbridge College Match Program 2014-15 and have a question regarding the Regular Decision Process. If I opt-out of the College Match process and decide to apply through QB Regular Decision in December (assuming that I will become a QB finalist), can I still apply to other colleges during November using their Early Action and Early Decision process? Can I apply to the colleges that are already on the QuestBridge partners list early through their early action or early decision process not using the QB College-Match Process but just mentioning that I am a QuestBridge finalist?

If you opt out of the College Match process, then you are free to apply to any college, partner school or not. As for your second question, each partner college has its specific policy regarding ED/EA as a QB finalist. You can refer to the Regular Decision Requirements page on the QB website. I’m not sure if you can apply ED/EA to non-partner colleges; the QB page regarding this question says “coming soon.”

Anyone have some advice for me? I was thinking about ranking several schools, including Wellesley, Wesleyan, Pomona, Scripps, and USC; however, I’m kind of rethinking everything now. Wellesley is my top choice, and has always been my dream school. Being matched would be amazing, as much of the fees would be paid for, but it’s also binding. I guess I’m just afraid of being matched to a school I’m not 100% sure in. Would it be better just to rank Wellesley as my only school, and apply for the others through RD? Will Wellesley be more interested if they see themselves as my only school ranked (maybe it shows that I’m really determined to get in or something)?? I realize that only a few people actually get matched, but if I hypothetically were to get it, I wouldn’t want to regret anything. If anyone–past QB applicant or current–has some advice, I would greatly appreciate it!

@korsola
“Colleges will not know what ranking you assigned their school, only that you ranked their school. Colleges will also not know which other schools you ranked.”
So definitely think over whether you would like to go to the other schools if matched, but don’t limit yourself on the basis that Wellesley will be impressed if they’re the only school you rank – for they won’t see that.

@sassy101kd, if you opt out of NCM you can apply to any college, QB partner or other, in whatever cycle you choose,

If you apply through questbridge to only the non-binding schools, (and let’s say you are actually chosen by Stanford or something) since it’s non-binding you can still apply to other schools right? Also, is it better to apply regular decision to other schools through the questbridge app or common app? Does one help/hurt more or are they essentially the same?

@nrnr29 thank you so much! i wasn’t sure if they would be able to see or not…now I’ll think over it some more.

Is there anywhere I can find how many matches and finalists each school accepts? Specifically Dartmouth, Princeton, Vassar, Brown, Columbia, and USC?

nebhar97, there’s a list of how many Questies were matched last year, but there is no list of ‘how many finalists each school accepts’ because that doesn’t exist. There’s no quota. In fact, it’s very variable each year. There are some schools that traditionally match a lot of kids e.g. Chicago and some schools that usually match very few e.g. Swarthmore. But many schools fluctuate by year, e.g. Stanford accepted more than usual last year. Trying to game the system by the odds won’t work with QB. What will work is doing really in-depth research into the colleges with a focus on which schools really ‘fit’ you, in and out of the classroom, creating a smart list of colleges you would love to attend and ranking as many of those as you would be willing to commit to - that will greatly up your chances of being accepted in the match round. And if you’re not matched, odds are you’ll be accepted by some of those schools in RD.

Thanks for that @honeybee63‌ …I think? I’m interested in finding out that info because I am truly interested in those 6 schools. I didn’t know one could actually game the system. Tell me more…
