Questbridge Scholarship - 2008

apparently you can't, collegehopeful78. I called them and they said that what you send on September 30th is final and unchangeable even after you are selected as a finalist. In fact I think they said that the application you send on September 30th is automatically forwarded.

Pretty disheartening... I heard this is a policy change from last year.

Well I guess my supplements and other essays better be killer.

You may not like what is following, but I believe most of the latest comments about the essays miss the mark by a wide margin.

The more essays an application requires, the better your chances are. It's easier to write an 800 word essay than a 500 words essay. It's easier to submit five essays than submit only one or two. Essays represent your very best OPPORTUNITY to shine and differentiate yourself from a very large pack of equally qualified applicants. Regarding numbers, you can safely assume that several thousands applicants will jockey for a spot among the finalist and a college match.

All partner schools are highly competitive, and you ought to think about the expectations placed on successful applicants. Compared to the writing requirements you shall face in your first weeks of college, the QB application will look like a walk in the park.

When it comes to the deadlines, be happy that the requirement is at the end of September and not later when all your time will be monopolized by all kind of other demands. The reality is that you would be better served by having all your supplementary essays done NOW with only an occasional polishing to be done in the next weeks. Fwiw, the requirements are exactly the same as you would need for a direct application to the individual schools ... so why worrying or complaining.

To put it bluntly, FEW will be chosen, and procrastinating and delaying it further simply dimisnished your chances.

My chances specifically?

xiggi.. that's all well and good, I agree about more essays the better... but I think the new policy now is that you CAN NOT even polish the essays you write now for questbridge on september 30th.

I agree. What a horrible policy that makes no sense. Its one thing the deadline is so early but not even letting us change stuff that we had to rush in some cases is just outright dumb.

Celita and CH78, I'll simply repeat my comment about missing the mark.

First off, why do you assume that applicants are EVER allowed to polish essays after their due date? Do you think you can amend your Common Application after submitting it?

Secondly, why do you assume that applicants were given more latitude in prior years?

Lastly, you were given PLENTY of time and the same rules apply to everyone. There is a reason why many recommend to start the essay process during the summer, or well before the day first day of the senior starts.

Hmm, I'm not sure if that is completely right xiggi...

(to correspond with your numbered points) I don't say that we should be able to polish our essays after the due date for QUESTBRIDGE, but we should be able to polish our essays before they get to partner colleges (when it matters no?).

I have spoken to past Questbridge recipients, they said you were allowed to edit your application all through October before it was sent to partner colleges (if you are selected as a match recipient). I called Questbridge and they said the policy was changed this year.

Well, sure, but I think it is a disadvantage compared to regular EA applicants (who don't do Questbridge) who get the time between September 30th to November 1st to polish their essays.

What if things change in this month after september 30 and your essays or application no longer represent you adequately?

But oh, maybe I'm just grumpy because I have to rush an 800 word biography in less than 24 hours.

Its not really plenty fo time. For example my activities in the summer began at 7:00 am and eneded at 7pm. By the time I got home and ate it was almost 9pm. and i Had to readarticles for my research so it was 11 sometimes.

Um, I feel like I've intruded on something. Previous comments notwithstanding, here's what my friend, who was matched to Stanford last year, told me about how she approached the application:

"I worked on different parts of these documents at different times. The Common app is just a formality--at least for the Quest schools that request it--so it's really no brainer since you can just use your Quest essays. The CSS Profile I believe took a while longer so I started on that earlier, especially since I also needed it for other schools (just in case I didn't get named a finalist). I would do the same for teacher recs: tell them ahead of time so that they've got time to make a good one for you. I would ask them about it now actually. "

So if you're like me and Halcykon (I assume you asked to be matched to some Ivys?), you still have work to do. Wheee - wonderful. ^_^

I am not even sure I am doing Questbridge.

how could we know QB essay topics ahead of time in summer? I know QB do this kind of national college match program in 10th grade, but I thought they changed the essay topic every year, so I always keep in mind the application will come out on Mid-August, then as soon as they were out, i started working on it. But I still don't feel those essays are as good as I hope they will be. This moment, I am still editing and waiting for some people's comments about my essays. and none of my teacher rec arrived yet. and you guys words let me feel it's our own fault to start this late.

if princeton, stanford, and yale are non-binding college matches, does that mean I can apply to upenn ED?

Not perfectly sure of the answer to your question, einnoc07, but I was thinking of applying to Brown ED because Stanford and Yale were not binding. In the end I decided not do.

Think about it - early decision is completely binding. Unless you're in a financial situation where you're pretty sure that UPenn will give you a decent and adequate financial package, it might not be worth it... you find out if you're a finalist Oct. 26th. If you are, you have a (albeit, very slim) chance of getting a full ride to Princeton, Stanford, or Yale. You turn in your binding application to UPenn Nov. 1st and find out Nov. 31st you've been matched to Princeton, Stanford, or Yale.

How would it work from there? You find out you get accepted to UPenn Dec. 15th and have to turn down a full ride to Princeton, Stanford, or Yale, because those were non-binding.

To me, it's just too complicated, and I'm keeping my options open for the very very slim chance I get matched to a partner school over getting into/finding out from Brown early and not being able to compare financial packages from other schools.

aeshechina, ..this might work, might it's against QB's rule. QB said if you are a finalist, u can't apply any EA/ED.
Yeah, from finalist to actually math, only i think less than 20% people could do it. but still. full ride to those elite colleges.

another concern,it sounds like many people only ranking princeton, stanford, yale for their college match and left others blank? I am still deciding which 8 i will choose, i have a list, but don't know whether try those 3, because almost everyone here choose them.

I wouldn't let the colleges other people chose to rank affect my own decision - either you could see yourself going to the college or you can't. The appeal with Princeton, Stanford, and Yale is that they're non-binding.

I was considering UChicago, Oberlin, Rice, and Williams, but I don't want to go to those schools enough to be bound to them, even if it meant a full ride. Just think about where you want to be for the next four years of your life, and rank your own - I doubt the percentage of applicants who rank certain schools will affect whether they deem you were inherently qualified to be accepted/named finalist/matched.

Some questions:

1) On the Household Income section, Questbridge asks for financial information. Are they asking for 2006's info or 2007's?

2) Also, they don't ask for your Social Security number. How do they know you're not lying? What if my parents make a typo?

I've just sent it! WOOOhooo..!

Lucky you. I hope to send it in about an hour.
