Does anyone know if being a questbridge finalist gives you a better chance into getting into any of your ranked schools, specifically Columbia?

isnt it guaranteed?

No it is not guaranteed. I did Questbridge and got accepted, with Columbia as my first choice. The great thing about questbridge is the fact that if you get past the preliminaries and first draft round, you have a better chance of being accepted than applying alone. the reason is that the vast majority or QBers are a minority: socially/race/economically etc Most that make it to the final round are very determined individuals b/c it is VERY hard to go through questbridge. …you apply to get into it you apply to get into the college national selection then you apply to the various colleges by their separate req - max is 8 colleges. It took all of my free time in the fall. It shows the colleges that you are dedicated and that if you do get accepted you get full scholarships and health insurance among other things covered. QB is the best way to go…tis just harder (the rewards pay off though). If you take the time to get to know the QB director of columbia and visit the college your chances are better as the ppl get to know the real you.

I thought I remembered the questbridge people getting their decisions back early. Maybe even for the ED round.

Yeah, this year you know your matched college by Dec. 1st. And thanks drake333 (ha, 333 is my lucky number :)), I will def. try hard for this scholarship. Btw, do you know if I still have time to retake my SATs in Oct. in order to be considered for Questbridge?

Of course you still have time, November was the latest but it’s best you get it done asap. Yes I did know I was accepted to Columbia before ED decisions were out; however, Columbia could not tell me definitively until that time. QB is best for ed b/c you get 8 tries instead of one, however you have to be sure b/c its a lot of work applying to multiple ones…that means mult applications and diff essays. Princeton had the most non uniform essays …meaning they did not match what other colleges asked.

What do you mean matched school?

^The matched school is the school you are accepted to, out of the 8 that you rank, during the national college match round (the Dec. 1 notification round).

once your matched you dont get to know if the other schools would have accepted you…so rank carefully. I remember i had to tell Mit and upenn among the other ivyL’si was withdrawing it was the funniest thing ever…i think they were offended. {im sure they werent, but their replies were off beat}

What did they say?

some of them did not think I was seriously withdrawing and still had me under consideration in the spring even tho I was committed at the end of fall. Others were like oh I hope you all the best btw which school? etc.

I hated telling schools I wouldn’t be attending. Well, only UChicago and Georgetown.

Georgetown because I think they’re going downhill and I think they need all the help they can get.

UChicago is a sweet school, and it was a close 2nd place. I fell in love with this school after getting in ED and poured over everything for 4 months. I knew I had to pick Columbia for a variety of reasons, and since I have come to love Columbia, but UChicago will always be my first… sounds kinda creepy

sorry to steal this thread!
