Question about acceptance

Hi,

I have a couple of questions about UF's acceptance. I planned to go to UF since I was 6 or 7 (grew up in FL, still here) and I applied Early Decision. I was rejected with a 1320 on the SAT, 4.4W, 3.8 UW and a slew of extracurriculars, and a full AP schedule of classes. Can anyone clue me in on why I wasn't accepted? I have read of people with 1250s and 3.5s getting in without much EC.

Also, is there any chance of reapplying for the normal decision, even for summer classes?

Thanks for the help,
Jon.

I find that unlikely. You weren't even deffered? I would give them a call and ask why you weren't accepted. You could always have your parents appeal the decision. I know people who did this and were successful in doing so. If you were completely rejected, then you can not reapply until next year. In the admissions letter, they would have given you a conditional acceptance where you would have to take summer courses. But it seems they didn't even offer you that.

Again, I am pretty surprised that you weren't offered admission. However understand that MANY people applied this year and it was very competitive. So although you are definitely qualified to attend UF, they couldn't offer it to you. But I would still have your parents or yourself call admissions and appeal the decision. It's a long shot, but they may over turn it (or give you a conditional acceptance for summer). Anyways, good luck and let us know how it turns out.

EDIT: How did you feel about your essays and teacher recs? Are you confident that your teachers wrote you good recommendations? It is possible that they did not accept you because of your essays and/or teacher recs. This is the only thing that is possible (because your stats are solid).

Thanks for the response.

I felt my essay was solid. It was by no means a short, messy, last minute thing. I'm not the best writer in the world, but it was probably one of my better essays I've written. I think my teacher recs were pretty decent also.

Also, would it make any difference that I said I was applying for the Engineering Program as opposed to just the general university application? I had a 710 on the math SAT just FYI.

Just for clarification, this is what was on the website when I checked,

" Your application to the University of Florida was given a careful and thorough review. Regrettably, the Admission Committee is unable to offer you admission. Admission to the university is a selective process that is academically rigorous and restricted by limited space availability. The university wishes you well as you pursue other opportunities.

Sincerely,
Office of Admissions
University of Florida"

I just feel screwed over, I did not apply to any other universitys because everyone, including my guidance counselor, teachers, students, parents, told me I was a "guaranteed acceptance." My only real choice now is UCF, which I really am not excited for (can't pay out of state tuition).

Edit: Well, one thing that came to mind is my ECs may not be as good as I thought... I'll try and list out what I can think of:

3 years of Varsity Football
2 church mission trips to Mexico
National Honor's Society
Student Council
High School Jazz Band
Vocational Employment
Frequent volunteer services in the Orlando intercity
Tutoring
And I think a couple more minor ones that I can't recall at the moment.

Would that be too little for me to get in?

I would appeal the decision. Go to your high school guidance counselor and find out what you need to do next. Unless you have a red flag on your high school records (suspension, arrest record, etc...) you should have been admitted.

I feel the same way you do....I know a know a person who was accepted last night with a 3.8 WEIGHTED and a 2.8 UNWEIGHTED GPA.....
and AVERAGE SaT SCORES
I feel so bad for you
HE ISN"T EVEN IN THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY!

Haha, national honor society isn't the end-all be all.

I have some pretty solid stats and I wouldn't be in it if they begged me... I have better things to do with my time than painting easter eggs. It's a joke at my school.

But yeah, this sounds ridic. Tons of my friends got in with way less than that. Even my friend with a DUI got in with substantially less than that. Appeal that.

No, that is plenty of ec's. I would definitely try to appeal it. They should at least give you admission into the summer term.

mmm unless your forgetting to mention something to us, then i dont see why you didnt get in

Admissions really does try to look at applicant holistically (right word?) not all based on scores and numbers like some of you may believe. I know students that have gotten in with 980, 1020, 1050 out of 1600 SAT's.

^^ Right, that's why I asked about his teacher recs/essays. He said they were good and he posted a very good ec list. There is something more to this.

Monday I am going to get my guidance counselor to call the UF admission's dept and inquire about it and appeal. Do you guys have any advice or anything? Or will my counselor know all about it?

Thanks for all the help so far, I appreciate it.

hopefully your gc should know what to do. last year a student at my school was rejected. the guidance councilor called UF explaining that the student had a rough year due to "family issues" and was later accepted.

You mentioned that you are not excited about the prospect of UCF because you "can't pay out of state tuition" but you stated that you "grew up in FL, still here". These statements seem to contradict themselves. Were you an in state applicant, or out of state applicant? Why would you be concerned about the out of state tuition for UCF?

I don't think we're getting the whole story here. Your stats and official decision do not match, and UF is not that unpredictable except for extremely borderline students, which you do not appear to be.

^^ I think he just worded it weirdly. He is saying that he is not excited to attend UCF because he has no other choice in-state. He can't pay out-of-state tuition so he would have to stay at UCF since it is in-state.

ok im kinda in the same boat as u .
i have a 4.360 gpa
i had a 1010/22
asian
lots of ec good ones
nhs...mock trial...fbla...etc. etc..
lots of community service
my essay was pretty good it was unique because i spoke about my culutre
good rec
and stuff and i was rejected
i have wanted to go there since 7th grade!
i simply dont understand
what should i do?

plus i had legal internships up the ass
and i also perform in cultural Events

Yea, sorry, as GatorEng23 said, I am instate, and cannot pay out of state tuition for other schools that I am interested in. UCF/FIU/USF etc do not excite me at all, and I refuse to go to FSU (true Gator fan).

I wish I could pinpoint what I'm leaving out, but I really cannot think of anything. I'll talk to my Guidance Counselor Monday and let you all know what she/the UF admission dept says.

If your GC can't really do anything, have your parents give them a call. Sometimes a good parental talking can sway the admissions heads. ;)

really? wat should my parent say? my mom was going to call ...like should she have stats in front of her when speaking with them or ?

i highly suggest you to reconsider having your parents call. your counselor is a much better idea
