Question about acceptance

so make an appointment with her and have her call?
kk i guess but what should she say? i mean she knows i was qualified but like the thig that breaks me is my scores..they are average. what should i advise her to do?

honestly, you cant advise her to say anything. problem is that she has probably been doing this for a looong time. she knows the drill, how the system works. you gotta understand that having a counselor/parent call is like having your mom be your job reference. It just doesn't work like that because they're on your side.

Sure, its possible that your counselor is highly respected by UF and if she is usually unbiased, her opinion may help but thats rare. What people don't understand is that your college app is the first thing that is truly you independantly. Unlike when you had a problem at school, theres no one to call because theyre analyzing you.

The only thing you can do is change YOUR image. Add to your app, submit semester grades, etc

coffee, an SAT score of 1010 may be average nationwide but unfortunately it is not average for UF, which is closer to 1300. While I certainly agree that you were an excellent candidate with many great leadership and EC positions, and probably deserved to be at UF, the adcom clearly did not think it was good enough. Still, you are definitely welcome to try contesting the decision, which is what I would do if I were you!

Lesclaypool, your grades and scores are so good, there must be some other reason your weren't accepted. I've told this story before, but I think it's worth telling again.

My neighbor applied RD to UF's architecture program two years ago. All his friends were getting their notices at decision time, and he received nothing. He waited a few weeks, and called UF to find out why. As it turns out, on the part of the application where they ask you if you've ever been convicted of a felony, he checked 'Yes' by mistake! (And then of course, he never filled out the section where you're supposed to explain the conviction.) They said that they had sent him an email, asking him to explain the conviction, but he said he never got an email from them.

He had applied RD, so it was too late to do anything about it. But you've applied ED, and there may be time to find out what went wrong, and to correct it if it's something that can be corrected.

You or your Guidance Counselor can call the Admissions office yourselves, and they will connect you to an Admissions Officer, who will take your name and address. Admissions will send the appeal information to you in mid-February, and you'll return your appeal form to Admissions by the end of February. As I understand it, they'll review the appeals at the end of February.

Calling Admissions is easy, and not scarey at all. The people are very nice. Call 352/392-1365, and you can press '0' to bypass all the recordings. Tell the receptionist you'd like to appeal, and she'll connect you to the right person.

In the meantime, go ahead and apply to UCF, FIU, etc., so you have them in your back pocket. BTW, the neighbor I told you about attends FIU now, and he loves it. He picked FIU over the other state schools because he was guaranteed his own room as a freshman. They have suites, with four small bedrooms off the common room. Sounds nice.

Best of luck to you!
g8trmom

Thanks for the all the help so far, I'm still working on it.

I talked to my GC today about the situation, and she was shocked that I didn't get in. She left a voice message and emailed one of the Admissions Officers at UF, but didn't get a reply by the end of the school day. Because of all the ED applicants calling in, the admissions office is swamped (excuse the pun!) with call and appeals, but hopefully they'll get back to me tommorow.

I'm starting to think I may have done something like what happened in your story G8trmom. I've been trying to find out some reason why I was rejected, and honestly can't think of anything.

I am currently filling out my UCF application also... unfortunately. If I'm not going to UF, I'd rather just stick close to my Orlando home rather than go to Miami for FIU, and I would think they'd both be guaranteed with my scores.

Its not out of the norm. My friend with a full IB diploma w/ a 1280 SAT got rejected. He knows someone with a 1390 that got rejected as well. Actually...my friend in my calculus class with a 1310 and a 3.8 UW GPA got rejected from USF. I think they admissions are extremeley picky this year. I think I only got in because I attended the shadow day and my sister also attends UF.

itihnk im starting to hate you lansing lool
just kidding
check it out

my stats 1010
one friend got in with a 1090 BTW..SHE CHEATS LIKE CRAZY:) HAS A 4.0 UW
one got rejected witha 1350
another rejected with a 1300
another rejected with a 23 on her acts and she plays 4 sports

hmm very random yes...its just BC THERE ARE TOOO MANY APPLICANTS
THEY CANT HELP IT...THEY SAY THEY TAKE THE CREM OF THE CROP....YAAAAAA W/E LOL ;)
HEHE
BASICALLY I AGREE W/ GATOR MOM WHO I THINK IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL THAT WHERE EVER WE END UP GOING WE ARE GOINGTO LOVE IT
TRUST ME I BETTTER I JUST CRIED THE ENTIRE WEEKEND OVER UF
I DONT THINK IM GONNA CONTINUE DOING THAT

I use to think that 1300s were garunteed admissions for UF. But they're not even garunteed for USF. The friend I was talking about had the same GPA and 1310 on his SATs, hes officers of 2-3 clubs, and volunteers for FUN. Hes also on the academic team AND his sister attends USF. But unfortunatley, he got rejected from USF ED.

wait usf ahs early decison?
i didnt know that
also, usf requires like a a 17 0r 18 on the act...

oops i was wrong
SAT Reasoning Verbal: 510 - 600 72%
SAT Reasoning Math: 520 - 610 72%
ACT Composite: 21 - 26 28%
still ur friend should have gotten in ;(

lesclay, did you ever consider that UF legitimately rejected you? Would it really be such a shocker? They do in fact reject several valedictorians each year, and everyone knows that they are becoming increasingly competitive. With a supposed average GPA of 4.0 and average SAT of 1300, nobody's admission is gauranteed, no matter who you are.

By the way, what's your beef with UCF and FSU and other Florida schools? It is well understood that FSU has many individual colleges and programs that far surpass comparable ones at UF... like their meteorology department and theater school and even their nationally recognized film school. UCF is also an excellent state school with a large and diverse student population. For many people, especially those who are the first in their family to go to college, it is a great achievement to be accepted to college at all. Do you think that by going to UF your life will somehow be better, that you will have better friendships and secure a better job and make more money? If so, you are quite mistaken.

If UF is where you want to be, try going to a different school for a semester or two then applying as a transfer. Just keep the GPA way up if you do that.

My son was also rejected from UF with a 3.83 UF gpa and 1390 SAT. He is considering an appeal, but you can only appeal if you have NEW information (improved grades, better SAT, etc.)

UF is a great school without any doubt -- however, there are many great schools out there, and you will probably love wherever you end up going. Once you get over the UF rejection, some other school will turn out to be the perfect place for you.

Also note that UF is trying to become a "Public Ivy" -- a public university with Ivy league standards. This is why their average GPA is now above 4.0, and I'm told that 90% of freshman have SATs above 1350.

Good luck wherever you go -- and remember, you can always go to UF for grad school!

lol I know its not 90%, probably less than 50%. I saw a slew of ED acceptances of people on here with SATs that were well under 1300.

1120 For the win.

"HE ISN"T EVEN IN THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY!"

Hahaha, like that makes a difference. In most schools, NHS is the biggest joke ever.

"lol I know its not 90%, probably less than 50%. I saw a slew of ED acceptances of people on here with SATs that were well under 1300."

-Just because their SAT scores are under 1350 doesn't mean they can't get accepted. Those people got in because of the holistic grading at UF. The ECs and essay are strong factors in determining if you get accepted or not because from those the admission faculty can read them and can get a sense of how experienced and mature you are. From there they can determine if you are ready for college especially at UF. Another possibility is that their GPAs made up for their mediocre SAT scores. Don't forget UF sees GPA as a big factor in their admissions process.

The person who got rejected from USF probably had a criminal background. I find it highly improbable that a "good" student could be rejected from USF.

I'm sorry you were rejected Lancling. The Early Decision pool of applicants did not seem as selective.... research on the percentage of successful appeals. It seems this year has become incredibly competitive.

Wow, this blows for all 1300+ rejectees. So many people were admitted from my school with lower than those SAT scores and only decent GPA's. One kid had a 3.8 and 12something SAT, and was a URM and applied early with a lot of EC's and got rejected while this other kid with a 1010 and only a couple EC's got in RDI. Not to mention basically everyone who applied at my school minus about 4 people got in. And those 4 are the people you would think should have gotten in (all URM's with good GPA's, EC's and test scores). UF is so sporadic this year, I'm starting to get nervous since I'm a RDII applicant.
