Okay, so I have applied to a few schools, but for the sake of the case I will use two:

I have applied to state school, which gives results in February.
I have applied to Princeton, which gives results in April.

Say I get into the state school and want to accept early so I can start planning and getting priority on things, but then I get into Princeton. Am I locked out of accepting the offer? Or would I simply accept Princeton's offer and ignore the state school one (and forget about the deposit)?

You can “un-commit” from the State school at the penalty of the deposit to accept PTon’s offer. Courtesy would demand you let them know ASAP so they can free your spot for someone else.

Why would you accept early to the state school – even if you get the decision in February? If the state school’s deadline for deposits is also May 1st, you can wait for a decision from Princeton and not risk losing the deposit to the state school.

The OP has indicated that he/she would deposit at the state school earlier in order to get priority for certain things, in the case that he/she would be going there.
