hey guys I don't want to crowd up this forum with stupid threads but I have a question about the activities part of the application. Obviously you list school activities, but it mentions hobbies, so how did you guys go about doing that? If you like watching sports, reading, or playing frisbee or something, did you include that kind of thing? If so, how did you go about specifying years of interest in the boxes? Should this be for additional info??

I doubt that's the kind of information (i.e. watching sports on TV) that is application worthy.

haha I know it was just an example...but the app says hobbies, not all of which are school-related. i just wondered what we were supposed to do with those...

The example an admissions officer at UVA gave as an example of a hobby was that some kid designed airplane engines for 747s on his computer at home. So if you have a hobby like that, put it down. Not only will it get you in, but Boeing will also be knocking on your door the next morning.

That was a true story, btw. But in more realistic terms, they want to know if you have started a company, designed software, etc. Some kids do that for hobbies I guess. Other than that, I wouldn't put like "reading" or anything down. They should be able to tell that by your CR score lol. Did that help?

haha yeah it helped...i knew when i was typing this thread out that i was going to come out sounding like an idiot haha, should have picked better examples...

Yeah , if you've got some worthwhile hobbies , which are productive. Starting your own small business for e.g.
Im pretty sure that even hobbies like reading (consistently) , playing o practicing a certain sport or instrument to improve your skills would reflect well on you on your application. It gives the adcom a sense of who you are and that is what they ultimately want.

Do keep out things like watching tv and playing computer games out though:) You get my drift.

different question.....

did you guys list sat IIs on the app? I know Michigan doesn't look at them, but I took Bio as a freshman and bombed it...would omitting it look like i'm hiding something?

They don't consider SAT 2's , it makes no difference.

I just talked like 2 minutes ago with an adcom about that, and she says that they see them no matter what if you submit the SAT reasoning (bc they're attached), BUT THEY WILL NOT CONSIDER THEM IF THEY HURT YOU, bc they aren't required. Mine are gonna be fun. One will help and the other won't lol.

this is just a quick response to the first question, i am putting down yoga and surfing just as a way for them to get an idea of my personality i dont think it can hurt

^That should be all right. I think anything physical (like sports), mental (like chess), and artistic (like pottery or painting) is okay because in a way they show your character. But don't include anything that all of America does for lazy fun (TV, computer games, etc.) Reading in itself is a great hobby, but it does nothing for you as an applicant because all high schoolers should be reading. It's really nothing special.
