Question about admission

So, I know that UChic is like a really good schoo, and us news ranks it very highly, but then how does it have a whopping 40% acceptance according to collegboard.com, is that really true. is it that easy to get into such a top school? i mean schools lower than it in the ranking have much lower acceptance rates, something just doesnt seem to add up. I mean i understand more intelligent ppl apply to the school in the first place so you can't really compare like grade B school with 40% acceptance with UChic. but still, top students apply to all of the top private schools, how does UChic maintain such a high percentage acceptance? something just doesnt seem to add up.

Very few people who apply here are idiots. Chicago is a self-selecting school in that no one without work ethic and or brilliance would ever want to come here. Not many people know of it, in comparison to the idiocy that is HYP, ect...

Basically, you have to be pretty sharp to even know about Chitown and sharper to apply because it takes time to fill the app out since it is Uncommon.

ya, thats true. i believe you, its just that it still seems a bit high. i ono, i guess i was just suprised because i know how good of a school it is

It also could be a bit high because the work load is enormous - at least in some majors, I know. The HYPs out there have a much higher percentage of people applying, as that type of student wants the name and will sacrifice an excellent education at another school to have it. UChicago students want to live the "life of the mind" and will choose the school even over Ivy Leagues; I know someone who rejected Harvard for Chicago, for example.

pooty_pooty,

Considering that Chicago is known the world over for its academics and intellectual atmosphere and that incoming first-years have standardized test scores equal to or above most highly selective schools, the only reasonable conclusion is that selectivity isn't a great measure of a school's value. Duh.

Man, don't pull that crap. Harvard, Yale, and Princeton will also give you a great education. Chicago can stand on its own merits.

Didn't mean to "pull that crap"... they are great schools, but I think they are over HYPed, so to speak. There are many other amazing schools that don't get the same rep and that was what I meant by idiocy.

Oh, well, ok, I agree with that. But that happens in any field where there you're dealing with commodities: brand name often wins over value.

I just hate it when people at Chicago look down on people at Ivy League schools. Although I prefer the environment at Chicago and even might believe the University most closely approximates what I believe to be the ideal education, the reality is that people at the ivies are getting a great education, too, even if it is more apt to fall short of my educational ideals.

It is altogether too Whitmannesque to be Ivy-hatin' fo real.

ahahahahaha.
I actually couldn't write that without laughing at my complete lack of seriousness.

pooty, everyone here is def. right on the money. All you need to consider is that, even though we have a 40% admission rate, the entering class has a higher SAT average than half of the Ivy league schools. The admission percentage, in Chicago's case, is an awful measure. Many people guesstimate that if it were to adopt the common app and offer an ED program (I hope none of these ever happen) that its admission rate would plummit right to the level of those other schools you mentioned. And, on a personal sidenote, please, for the love of God, when you apply to colleges, don't use US News, even if that would be a deciding factor for you to come to Chicago.
