I'm doing ED to Vandy...it says that they send out a letter by December 15th. Could it come earlier than that? And do they send the decision in the mail or by email first?

It could possibly come out before the 15th but I don’t think it will this year.

I know this week Vandy is finishing the applications and next week they go to committee. I think at the earliest they could come out is the 14th, because the weekend interferes a little bit.

And I am pretty sure Vanderbilt still does snail mail.

Last year the admissions office was really good about updating the blog regarding mailing. You may want to refer to the archives to see what was said last year. When D applied ED (2004), the mail went out exactly on the 15th. Unless they have a change in policy for this year, it’s strictly snail mail. I think there was a post about why they don’t elect e-mail in the blog sometime last year.

BTW, ED applicants shouldn’t expect a big envelope. The ED acceptance envelope only contains an acceptance letter and a return card and envelope for sending in your matriculation deposit. Those accepted ED get the same big priority envelope with all the info on housing, etc. as the RD acceptances at the end of March.
