Question about admissions and family's annual income

Alright, so Harvard wants to recruit outstanding low-income students, correct?
And Harvard is also need-blind, correct?
So if they don't know your family's income when they are considering you for admissions, how in God's name will they know if you come from a low income family??/

They will from your application. Don't worry about it and just put your best foot forward.

Good question.

I called and I asked, "when the admissions committee is making a desicion on a candidate, will they know the person's family's annual income?"
she said "no, we're need-bling"
what the hell

they will kno if u apply for finaid... if u dont, well u gotta be rich

Well most applicants who family's yearly income exceeds $100,000 still often apply for financial aid. Also, the admissions committee can often determine your current wealth by your location, your school, and your parents' occupations. So for me they could probably tell that we didn't make much since my dad is the retail manager of Foot Locker at Short Hills, so.. but if both your parents are doctors, you live on Fifth Ave, and you attend Stuyvesant, Horace Mann, Regis, or any big name school then they expect otherwise.

Tonyt is right. my parents make way more than 100K and i applied for financial aid...

Well, the deal is my zip code is affiliated with wealth, but I'm in no way rich. (around 25,000 a year) and also, in my essay i plan to write about the jobs my mom has had such as mcdonalds and the such, but still. and the lady also said that the admissions office and the financial aid office are the intertwined so the ppl making the decision if you're in or not wouldn't know...

i'm sure there is someway they can find out about how much your family makes... I wish Byerly would post here. I'm sure he knows.

but they can tell by your parent's occupation for the most part and location is merely secondary because I was the same exact thing. Because our family makes in the mid-40's and we live in a town where the median income is slightly over $85,000 [and we have plenty of retired people, so you can just imagine] and I still think they could tell.

oh ok good.

Okay your college counselor or teacher recommendations, if you receive application waiver (if low income), your essays they all can tell about your financial status.

"you live on Fifth Ave, and you attend Stuyvesant, Horace Mann, Regis, or any big name school then they expect otherwise."

I thought stuyvesant is merit based and many poor kids attend it as it is public school and have no fee structure.

hellousdad: That is true. But many who do attend Stuyvesant do not qualify for HFAI.

Xjayz:

What is HFAI ?
