Question about Alternate Versions and Submitting to Multiple Colleges

Say I have 5 colleges currently listed under "My Colleges." Is it possible to submit the Common App to only 1 of the 5? If I wanted to use an alternate version for some/all of the remaining 4, would they be locked into the version I submitted? Or is it possible to move them to an alternate version and then submit it later?

tldr; I'm kind of confused how you submit the Common App to a specific institution vs. your entire list...is the prior possible? I haven't submitted my Common App for any colleges yet, so I hope this isn't a dumb question. Thanks! :)

You submit the applications one at a time, so to answer your question, yes, if you have 5 colleges listed under My Colleges, you can select the one you want to submit to and just submit that application.

If you want to create an alternate version for the other four, after you have submitted one application, you can do that. After you create the alternate version, go to the original version, select the college you want to move, click on “Remove this College” and it will ask if you want to move the school to another version of your application.

There is a limit of 10 versions total (including the original). But you really don’t need to have a different version for each school; that’s kind of the whole point behind a common application. The supplements are designed to provide each school any personalized information.

Thanks for your reply! It really cleared up some details. I thought I had to delete some colleges and then re-add them if the Common App submitted for all of them at the same time. I’m thinking about making 2 versions, 10 is a bit over the top haha.
