Question about an engineering discipline

Hi,
Does anyone know anything about majoring in "Systems Engineering"? I have been thinking about it studying it. How's the coursework and the job opportunities?

i think its a branch of industrial engineering. i dont know a whole lot about it though.

I would call it a blend of mechanical, electrical and some IE. It's an emerging field and I think the prospects look good.

I am a systems engineer. It's a broad field, which can include anything from computer systems to operations research, decision theory or decision analysis, or even finance and banking. Not many colleges have a systems engineering major. Other, more traditional fields tend to look down on systems engineering.

The opposite is true of employers: it is a heavily-recruited field. In general, companies are looking for people with real-world experience combined with the systems engineering degree, but that's true of all those big, strong mechanical engineers, too.

I can answer any specific questions about the field. What would you like to know?

Why do other fields tend to look down on it? Do they presume it's "easier"? Which companies tend to hire people with a bachelor's degree in systems engineering? Also, which schools are well-known for their systems engineering program? thanks
