Question about an essay prompt

One of the essay prompts within the blue book is the following:

"Is the world changing for the better?"

I found this very difficult and taxing to write and I have a few questions about it.

1). When providing examples for my view, with regards to this prompt, I feel like its hard to use literature or movies or whatever as examples and it would be easier just to use general knowledge about the world. So, would it be bad to just discuss my view: e.g. the world is changing for the worst because GLOBAL WARMING. And if that is bad would it be preferable to do something like (the world is changing for the worst as is demonstrated by an article in the new york times that said xyz)?

2). With regards to content: do you get penalized if you provide a negative view? I didn't end up writing the whole essay because I was confused and uncertain about the examples thing but this is an outline/plan i came up with and am unsure about whether this would earn me a good score:

intro: the world is going to hell

paragraph 1: climate change, political tension about nuclear situations, disease, corruption

paragraph 2: general decline in global fertility rates, kids of today on one side of the spectrum brought up in the ****hole that is the internet: bored, restless, aimless with a 20 second attention span and an addiction to video games. the other side of the spectrum: poor, undernourished, deprived. the developed world seeming to be heading towards obesity, unhappiness, monotony etc

conclusion

its terrible and ****ty (i was just brainstorming thoughts - haven't formed it into a coherent essay/outline yet) and potentially very offensive but i have no idea how to approach this topic

could someone help me out/give me some ideas please?

1) It is fine to use anecdotal evidence to support an idea in your essay (so long as it’s coherent and relevant).

For this essay prompt, I thought of Mark Twain’s novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The novel portrays an era when racist ideology flourished and inhabited every possible home, nook, and corner in American society. Our modern society is in stark contrast to the time depicted in Twain’s novel, which could be used to indicate a very positive step forward in the world (or at least a part of the world).

2) It doesn’t matter what kind of a stance you take, as long as your essay is well written and organized. I would, however, refrain from using derogatory terms–it’s more common sense than anything, but sometimes these things are overlooked.

Look back at history, there are a myriad of things to choose from.

The answers are all around you, you just have to look for them!

Cheers.
