I hadn't glanced at my e-mail for about a month before checking it today. I did all the old SAT Questions from the College Board, but unfortunately the posted answers only go 7 days back. Does anybody remember the answer to this one?

It's from July 3.

The word "collage" was A(first used) B(when referring) to works C(by) Dada and Surrealist artists, D(especially) those of German artist Max Ernst. (E)No error

Is it B or E? Anyone recall? I don't want guesses.

The answer's B. I figured this out by accident a while ago: Whenever you put your mouse over each of the answers, look at the URLs of the links...which ever answer choice has a "-1" in the URL will be the correct answer. All the wrong answers have "-0".

The answer is B:
The phrase "first used" refers to an one time event.
Therefore, the preposition must be an infinitive, such as "to refer".
"when referring" only works if the A choice is "used'.
You can't change answer A, because then it will alter the meaning fo the sentence.
Geez, I didn't catch that the first time I read the question. . .I would have missed this problem if this was the real test.

can you type the full sentence? it will help us a lot because there might be words before underlined sentences that can make one choice incorrect.
