Can i skip Calculus C if I've taken the Calc BC exam and got a 5? Do I have to take Calc D (or Calc IV) if I'm majoring in mechanical engineering?

a 5 on bc allows you to skip mathIA-IB, but that still leaves math53-54 for the ME math requirements, multivariable calc & linear algebra/differential equations.

can I take multivariable calc at a calstate and have my credits transferred to uc?

Yep, an out-of-state friend of mine is has done just that.

how hard actually is linear algebra? my friend's brother took linear algebra at berkeley and he barely pulled it through w/ a B-.

it's all relative. general consensus is that 54 is easier than 53; i've heard some say that 54 is easier (class / grading-wise) than IB and IA.

what are the courses they use to weed out mechanical engineering freshmen?

Math 1A and 1B, which are the two semesters of single variable calculus are the typical Freshman engineering math classes. 1A is pretty easy, 1B is pretty freaking hard.

Math 53 and 54 are taken Sophomore year typically for math, science and engineers. 53 is multi-variable calculus and is really hard while 54 is linear algebra and usually easier than 53.

since i've already taken the ap calc ab and bc exams, i'll be taking either multivaribale calc or linear algebra as a freshman. so how many units would a typical ME freshman be doing in one quarter?

ME Freshman usually go 15 or 16 units a semester. We don't use quarter system at Berkeley unlike most of the UCs.

oh yea, i forgot that berkeley uses semester system. thanks :)
