Hello! I went to the admitted students SEBS open house yesterday, and they gave us a sheet with the core requirements for students majoring in bio. Economic systems is required. I HATE econ (as of right now). I'm taking AP Macro and Micro right now, and I hate it. I have absolutely no interest in it whatsoever and it's difficult for me to understand it. I don't know if it's because I have a bad teacher, or econ really is just not for me. Anyway, I wasn't going to take the AP test, but now that I see it's required, I'm thinking about taking it. If I were to get a 4 or 5, that would mean I won't have to take econ in college, right? Ever? Or is it better to take it and hope I get a better grade since I took the course before (then it will help my GPA when orgo comes)? And do vet/med schools like to see that you took it in college? Apparently some people who took AP Bio are retaking it in college because some vet schools like to see you took it in college (or something along the lines of that). I'm just very confused right now as to how the whole system works and what I should do! Please help and thanks! Any advice/suggestions are appreciated!

AP credits and med school is an interesting topic. In general, if you opt to use AP credits, the med school admissions wants to see you then take the class after or a higher level. So say you have AP bio credit. They expect that you then take an upper level biology class. Some people instead opt to not take the credit and just take Gen Bio 101/102. For something like econ, I don’t think a med school is going to care whether you used AP credit or took it in college. I would say get it over with and take the AP exam if you really don’t like econ, although intro to micro and intro to macro are in general fairly easy classes.

Thank you very much! I guess I’ll try for the credit. I would say “it can’t hurt”, but actually, I’ll be out of $180 -.- is that opportunity cost right there? haha

ahh econ jokes. Well, you could opt to take only one of the exams, because I think you only need one of intro to micro/macro to fulfill that requirement. Should definitely double check that. Also, it definitely doesn’t hurt to have extra credits because it can allow you to register for classes earlier (registration priority is based on total credits earned, including APs).
