Question about Application consistency via major and essays

Hi,

I hope this question makes sense.
I am concerned that the interests I discuss in my essays and those apparent from my courses and extra curricular activities are not consistent with the actual major I am choosing for the colleges to which I am applying.

For example, for some essays I talk about being interested in medicine and science, but others I talk about being interested in political science and international relations--and for the major I put down international relations (or undecided, I can't remember).

Do you think the major I actually put down on the application matters in terms of admissions? Will choosing "undecided" hurt my chances--especially without a clear focus of interests?

I just have different interests and I am not entirely set on making a decision before actually going to college and taking some classes.

I would really appreciate responses,
Thanks and happy new year.

I'm sure what you eventually put down, but putting undecided will not hurt you.
